The AI Crisis in Higher Education: A Strategic Proposal
Mark Carrigan , University of Manchester , Oct 02, 2026 This short book ( 63 page PDF ) looks at the issues around the use of AI in educational institutions and considers ways to cope with it. There's a lengthy discussion of what it is and what the dangers are. I note especially that the core danger outlined here is lock-in - institutions get to the point where AI is an essential technology, whereupon providers start squeezing them on price and capacity. How could institutions gt to this point? The issue, argues author Mark Carrigan, is that universities especially lack the institutional…

Resistance to AI Isn't Futile. It's Healthy.
Artificial intelligence (AI) may be everywhere, but widespread adoption does not automatically create value. Resistance to AI is not a barrier to innovation in higher education. It is a necessary force for asking hard questions, protecting core values, and ensuring that technology adoption remains purposeful and mission-driven.

AI Tutors Are Changing Education - But Are Students Actually Learning?
Alex Kennedy , Next Horizon , Sept 30, 2026 According to this article, "the race is shifting from 'Who has the smartest chatbot?' to 'Who can build an AI that helps a person learn without doing the learning for them?'" It's a good question, because it's not exactly clear what the answer would look like (and indeed, it might be different for each student). "The problem is timing. If a beginner uses AI to bypass the exact mental operation they are trying to learn, they may become efficient before they become competent." This would have been a stronger article had it stuck to this question, but…

Manifesto for Generative AI in Higher Education – The Book Project
Hazel Farrell , Ken McCarthy , PressBooks , Sept 25, 2026 This is the book-length version of the much briefer manifesto ( 64 page PDF ) released last year. It's available in Pressbooks format or 197 page PDF . It is composed of 30 essays from various authors organized around the three major themes: rethinking teaching and learning; responsibility, ethics and power; and imagination, humanity and the future. I have mixed feelings about both the messaging and the purplish prose, but I do like the structure. And we don't have to fret silently if we disagree; there's an interactive website where…

On Aug. 26, a Semafor investigation using Pangram to determine whether recent guest columns in major newspapers were written using artificial intelligence identified a column by Schnell as “100% AI-written.” Schnell’s column in The Washington Post — titled “Universities are fighting AI cheating. But there’s a deeper problem.” — argued that “a degree should distinguish what students can do independently from what they can accomplish with AI.” submitted by /u/rellotscire [link] [comments]

How are university leaders thinking about the rise of AI-native universities?
I’ve had recent conversations with colleagues about AI-native universities. These institutions are designed around AI from inception, with the technology embedded in instruction, administration, and the underlying technology stack. A new AI-native university, the London School of Innovation, received accreditation in the UK. It offers a significantly lower tuition level than its peers. This may be the first of many. I’d like feedback from higher education stakeholders, including leadership and faculty, on how they’re thinking about this model. People are rightfully concerned about AI and…
