While visiting Glacier National Park in late June, I really wanted to photograph mountain goats. I tried to look at Logan Pass, but it was super foggy. On my second day, I was delighted to meet this fine fellow wandering around at Oberlin Bend. #mammals #Montana #wildlife #nature #photography
Photo of a male mountain goat standing amidst green shrubbery. He is standing at an angle, oriented to the left and away, but his head is turned back to look directly at the camera, showing off straight dark horns, furry elf-like ears, and a long face. He is still very fluffy from his thick white winter coat.

Presenting... the 4th paper from my post-doctoral fellowship with the USDA Forest Service Northern Research Station! 🧪 Research article title: "Tree species distributions modify decadal trajectories of bird species habitat suitability 🪶 predicted by climate change" Link: doi.org/10.1016/j.ge...
Image of one of the figures from the research article referenced in the post. The figure is a series of 16 maps of the eastern USA, arranged in 4 columns and 4 rows, showing bird species incidence (a metric of relative abundance) for 4 bird species during 4 different decades spanning the 2000s, 2030s, 2060s, and 2080s.

Cute family moment with a mother grizzly bear and her two small cubs, captured through my windshield from Going to the Sun Road in Glacier National Park, Montana. It is fun to see that baby bears share behaviors in common with human children, like clinging to their mom. #mammals #wildlife #nature

Final photos of the grizzly bear cubs... The baby bears were born this past winter but already have some pretty impressive claws! As the cubs grow, they will become more active in foraging with their mother for plant matter, arthropods, and small mammals. #mammals #wildlife #nature #photography
Photograph of a small grizzly bear cub sitting on the ground next to its mother, whose bulky rich brown body extends out of frame on the left. The baby bear's front legs are slightly raised, showcasing light curved claws that stand out against its dark brown paws. In the background, there are some fallen pale gray trees lying haphazardly on the ground.

Rawr. Last month, while I was watching a mother grizzly bear and her two cubs in Glacier National Park, this little one decided to practice her snarl and show off her wee little canines. What a precious and fearsome little lass. #mammals #wildlife #Montana #nature #wildlifephotography

Check out this little grizzly bear cub paw! While the baby bear was lazing around and being cute, mama bear was hard at work foraging for food. Grizzly bears are omnivores and eat a lot of plant materials, including roots, tubers, forbs, and berries. #mammals #wildlife #nature #wildlifephotography
Photograph of a little grizzly bear cub half-lying down near a pale gray downed tree, with its right back leg drawn up in the air and its left back leg extended along the ground. It is facing to the right and positioned slightly behind its mother, who extends out of frame to the left. They are both surrounded by a variety of green grasses and forbs.

When you are a baby bear, sometimes you just sit and stick out your foot, while your mother forages for food. Glacier National Park in Montana is a great region to look for grizzly bears, with a relatively high population for the lower 48 states. #mammals #wildlife #nature #wildlifephotography

Babies are gonna baby, no matter the species. Feets are gonna go in the air. While in Glacier National Park last month, it was really charming to watch this grizzly bear cub plop down next to its mama and do baby bear things while she foraged. #bears #mammals #wildlife #nature #wildlifephotography
Photograph of a small grizzly bear cub and its much larger mother in a grassy area with downed trees. The back and hindquarters of the mother grizzly bear is a rich mixture of brown hues and fills most of the left half of the photo, with the baby near the center. Have you ever gotten side eye from a baby grizzly bear? --- Prior to the 1800s, there were ~50,000 grizzly bears roaming western North America. Today, there are <2,000 in the lower 48 states of the USA, and they're protected as a threatened species. #mammals #wildlife #nature #wildlifephotography

The future of baby grizzly bears is in our hands! In the contiguous United States, grizzly bears have been eliminated from nearly 98% of their historical range, mostly due to human actions. Grizzly bear conservation efforts are critical (but complex). #mammals #wildlife #nature #photography

Baby bear time! 🐻 During my recent Montana trip, I saw a mama grizzly bear with two cubs in Glacier National Park. Most cubs are born in late January or early February, so these babies were just a few months old, but check out those already formidable claws! #mammals #wildlife #nature #photography
Photograph of an adult female grizzly bear and one of two cubs in a grassy area full of downed, sun-bleached trees. The mama bear is facing the camera but her head is down as she noses at the ground for grubs. The baby bear is just to her left, oriented towards the camera but looking to the right at its mother. While the mama bear is a rich variety of brown hues, with silverish grizzling on her shoulder, the baby is a more uniform medium to dark brown. Its relatively long, pale claws are in stark contrast to its dark brown paws.

My final good-ish wolf photo from earlier this month is very autumnal. I enjoyed the fall foliage in Jasper National Park, and even more so the wildlife! In addition to wolves, there was a family of moose and a handful of elk and mule deer. #wildlife #mammals #nature #autumn
Photograph of a distant wolf walking through short golden grass at the edge of a coniferous forest. The wolf is in profile, facing to the left, with its head lowered. It is mostly gray, with pale brown legs and dark markings on its pelt. Scattered brown shrubs are in the foreground, with a line of conifer trees in the background.

About 2 weeks ago, I was lucky to spot at least 2 wolves from a somewhat random stop along Maligne Lake Road in Jasper National Park. I was looking for birds, so it was pretty unexpected to see my first ever wolves! #wildlife #mammals

Recently, I attended The Wildlife Society conference in Edmonton, Canada, and then ventured to Jasper National Park. One of the best highlights of that trip was seeing WOLVES in the wild for the first time! Sure, they were ~0.5 miles (~800 m) away, but still so cool. #TWS2025 #wildlife #mammals
A highly cropped photograph of a distant wolf walking through chest-high pale yellow grass. The wolf is dark gray overall, with a pale gray muzzle. It is mostly in profile, facing to the left, with its head tilted toward the camera. In the background is a rocky hill interspersed with tufts of browning grass.

Female Lesser Nighthawks lack the bright white wingbars of their male counterparts (see my previous posts), but they are just as amazing to watch zip by in search of flying insect prey. I was lucky to see ~10 of these nightjars along one road in southeast Arizona. 🪶 #birding #nature #photography
Photo of a female Lesser Nighthawk gliding by through the air, with a distant blurred brown hill in the background. She is headed to the left, with wings outstretched. She is buff-colored overall, with brown striping on her belly and brown barring on her wings.

Having birds swoop around you with no concern for your presence is such a delightful experience and is a highlight of #birding for me. 🪶 I'm glad that I was able to capture one such moment with this male Lesser Nighthawk during my 1st time seeing the species. #nature #photography #BirdsSeenIn2025
Photo of a male Lesser Nighthawk captured in midflight against a flat light gray sky. He is posed rather dramatically, with wings spread and tail partially flared. His oddly flat head is in profile, looking to the left. His body is mostly dark brown and mottled with gray and rufous highlights. He has vertical white wingbars near his wingtips and a white band along the bottom edge of his tail.

I had never seen a Lesser Nighthawk before my trip to southeast Arizona this past June, and I had such an awesome encounter with this male! 🪶 Lesser Nighthawks like to zoom around the desert scrub searching for insect swarms, usually around dusk. #birding #nature #photography ##BirdsSeenIn2025
Photo of a male Lesser Nighthawk in mid-flight against a flat pale sky. His wings and tail are fully outspread in a dramatic pose, with his flat-looking head in profile facing to the left. Although he is buffy-colored overall with thick brown barring on his wing and tail feathers and thin brown horizontal striping across his belly, he also boasts a contrasting white bar along his chin, outer wingtips, and tail edge. The photo is amazingly crisp given the unpredictable flight paths of this species.

I interrupt my nightjar photo series to pose a challenge to my bird-aware friends + followers... Based on the two unusual bird species in these not-so-great photos, can you deduce where I was last weekend? #birds #birding #BirdsSeenIn2025
A mystery gull lays on a messy-looking nest on the roof of a building, near the top. He has a yellow bill, unstreaked white head, and a very dark mantle. If he stood up, he would have dull greenish-gray legs.A mystery gull lays on a messy-looking nest on the roof of a building, near the top.
