Did you know there are 15 different pride festivals across Georgia this year? From the Alabama line to the South Carolina border, the plains to the piedmont, there are so many places to celebrate pride in the state this year. It goes to show that no matter where you are, you're never really alone.
Black background with a rounded rainbow border. A yellow starburst is in each corner. White text at the top reads, “Pride in GA.” Below in white text is the list of Pride events in Georgia and reads, “Athens PrideFest - Jun 7. Colgay Pride (Columbus) - Jun 7. South Georgia Pride (Valdosta) - Jun 7. Rome Pride - Jun 13-15. Gwinnett Pride (Norcross) - Jun 21. Southern Fried Queer Pride - Jun 23-29. Augusta Pride - Jun 27-28. Smyrna Pride - Jun 28. Atlanta Black Gay Pride - Aug 28-Sep 1. Equality Fest (Gainesville) - Sep 13. Macon Pride Festival - Sep 25-28. Carrollton Pride Fest - Oct 4. Statesboro Pride - Oct 4. Atlanta Pride Festival - Oct 11-12. Savannah Pride - Oct 25.” Text at the bottom reads “Proud every day. Proud in every place.”

This pride month, we’re highlighting the places, people, and events that have made Atlanta the LGBTQ+ heart of the south. Today we feature Outwrite Books and Coffeehouse, an Atlanta institution that made a lasting impact on a generation of Atlantans. Read more about it in the Alt text.
Light gray background. The All Stripes crest is at the top. Below is black text reading, “ATL & Proud. Pride month history series.” A progress Pride flag forms a bar across the center. On top of this are two photos. The left is of Outwrite Books when it was open with a tag below reading “Then.” To the right is a photo of Casa Almendra, a restaurant in the same space today with a tag below reading, “Now.” Black text at the bottom reads, “Outwrite Books & Coffeehouse. 991 Piedmont Ave NE.”

Additional context:

This Atlanta institution stood at the intersection of Piedmont Avenue and 10th Street for 18 years, serving as the introduction to gay Atlanta for many transplants to the city.

First opened in 1993 by Philip Rafshoon, it quickly grew requiring a move to this location in 1996. By the early 2000's, this corner of Midtown had so solidified its reputation for LGBTQ+ business that the location was referred to as, "the corner of Gay and Lesbian." Over the years, Outwrite hosted book signings, community meetings, protests, networking events, and more. Open 7 days a week, it was a great place to grab a coffee or tea, people watch, read, or meet friends. After facing increasing rent and intense competition from online booksellers and big box stores, Outwrite was forced to close in 2011. The location was quickly converted to restaurant space and has operated as such since then.

Rainbow colors in a wave pattern make the background. White text reads “Let’s celebrate Pride Month. Pride is not just a month. Being our authentic selves is an every day journey. But who doesn’t want to celebrate just how fabulous we are? You are valid. You are important. You matter.” The All Stripes crest is at the bottom.

The Flag of the Match for Saturday, May 3 is the Two-Spirit Pride Flag. Use of this term by non-indigenous persons is seen as cultural appropriation. This flag will be waved exclusively by members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.
Black background. A rainbow burst is in the upper left and lower right corners. In the upper right, gold text reads “Flag of the match.” In the lower left corner, gold text reads “Two-Spirit Pride.” The two-spirit Pride flag is featured in the center. White text below reads, “The term Two-Spirit was developed over a series of meetings of the Inter-Tribal Native American, First Nations, Gay and Lesbian American Conference. While some use the term to describe indigenous individuals who fulfill the traditional third-gender social role, others within the indigenous community have come to use the term in a manner similar to the contemporary use of the term queer. Use of the term to describe non-indigenous persons is seen as
cultural appropriation.”

Some believe these to represent attraction to various genders and sexualities while others believe these to represent various genders and sexualities themselves. Okay All Stripes, this is a drink created especially for this match. We hope you enjoy The Dead Heron as this week's Drink of the Match. White raspberry lemonade and club soda with a splash of grenadine creates a delightfully refreshing drink. It's mixed with your choice of vodka or rum.
Black background with a red box across the bottom third. Gold glowing text arched across the top reads “Drink of the Match.” A pink drink with red tones in a clear glass with ice is on the left side. Our Flag of the Match for Sunday, March 16 is the Bisexual Pride flag. This flag was first used in 1998 but was based on a previous design dating back to 1987. The pink stripe represents attraction to the same gender, the blue opposite gender, and the purple is created by the overlap.
Black background. Rainbow colored shapes are in the upper left and lower right corners. The upper right corner has gold text reading “Flag of the Match.” The lower left corner has gold text reading “Bisexual Pride.” In the upper center is a photo of a Bisexual Pride flag. Below this picture s white text reading, “First unveiled in 1998, the bisexual flag was created to increase the visibility of bisexuals among society as a whole as well as within the LGBTQ+ community. The pink bar represents attraction to the same gender while the blue bar represents attraction to the opposite gender. The purple bar is created by the overlap of the two and represents attraction to multiple genders. The flag was designed by Michael Page based on a previous design by Liz Nania.”

Atlanta United Unified Team Signing Day was a blast. We can’t wait to see this team in action this season. They’ll play at home against Nashville, away at Austin, and home and away against Toronto.
