So excited to be a part of the Hamilton Fibre Forge this year! We will be bringing some of our roving, yarns, pellets, kits, and felts. Is there anything else you'd like us to bring?

Lambing has started here at our little farm, All Sorts Acres. All the mums have done an amazing job, lambing on some of the coldest mornings of the year so far.

The top three things Jesus was on about were feeding the hungry, healing the sick, and welcoming the stranger. Rich men have convinced so-called Christians to starve the hungry, gut health care, and deport the stranger to enrich themselves. It’s astoundingly anti-Christ.

October is International Wool Month! It's a celebration of the remarkable qualities of wool!  A biodegradable, sustainable and infinitely useful fibre that goes way beyond just clothing! #ontariofibreshed #campaignforwoolcanada #ontariosheep

Pointillism was popularized by painter George Seurat in the late 19th century. His paintings of many tiny coloured dots made the eye create new colours - very similar to a tweed. The final effect is a more lively, interesting image and yarn. #ontariofibreshed #handspinning #allwoolisgoodwool

Although I am not known for being colourful personally, I LOVE nerding out on colour! VIsual effects, combinations, tertiary, split complimentary, analagous, tints, tones, historic, and modern. So, this love is being made into local "waste" fibre roving! #localwool #ontariofibreshed #handspinning

To begin learning how fibres behave, before even knowing the 1,000+ breeds of sheep globally, is to learn about the different types of fibres that exist. Most breeds fall into some common categories.

Mushie's white wool is a fabulous wet felting wool. With average shrinkage rate of 40% when felted and fulled it'll make a good, structural felt for vessels and other works needing strength.. It's hairy, but not excessively. The surface is gently puckered.  #wetfelting #ontariowool #ontariofibreshed

DID YOU KNOW?  Each fibre is unique. Even fibres from the same species, animal, types, etc. are different from each other. Even fibre from the same animal will be different from year to year, season to season, and even day to day. Crossing sheep breeds also has a significant effect on the fibre.

Here is the spun result of the wool from Mushies Farm. It was such a nice wool to spin. What would I use it for? When spun, it can be used to weave, crochet, or knit a bag or blanket. Next we'll see how it wet felts.  #handspunyarn #ontariowool #ontariofibreshed #strongwool #allwoolisgoodwool

Once throught the false twist & another set of rollers, it's roving. It's strong enough to go through a guide & wound into a "bump" or oblong ball of roving. There's still some VM left, but nothing compared to where it began. #ontariofibreshed #localwool #allwoolisgoodwool #ontariowool #ontariosheep

The veil goes through the circular diz, compressing it, making a "rope". Next is a set of rollers, flattening the rope. The false twist compresses & "locks" the fibres together. #ontariofibreshed #localwool #allwoolisgoodwool #ontariowool #ontariosheep

The PING is what you want to hear. THis wool is strong enough for both mill and home processing. As long as it's not too dirty, short, long, or stained, this wool could do almost anything. #ontariowool #ontariofibreshed #woolquality #allwoolisgoodwool #typesofwool

ONce on the doffer drum, it's taken off with the doffer comb. It looks like it's scraping it, but it is really being combed. The wool likes to stick to itself, creating a cascade of wool fibres. #ontariofibreshed #localwool #allwoolisgoodwool #ontariowool #ontariosheep

A POP means be careful what you use it for. Wool break limits the end use for a lot of wool. Maybe pellets are the best option for this one. #ontariowool #ontariofibreshed #woolquality #allwoolisgoodwool #typesofwool

The wool then gets transferred to the smaller stripper, then to the larger worker roller to be taken to the drum. This also cleans the wool and evens it out.  #ontariofibreshed #localwool #allwoolisgoodwool #ontariowool #ontariosheep

Once washed & dry, the wool is picked to open it up. It's the first stage of removing VM (vegetable matter). The fast-revolving spiked drum of the picker can be very dangerous. NEVER put anything close to it while running. #ontariofibreshed #localwool #allwoolisgoodwool #ontariowool #ontariosheep
