My roommate just showed me Re-Animator as part of a series of “roommate films” she’s been trying to put together. Incredible film. Kind of concerned that she’s really into movies where one of the roommates causes insane violence to the other.

Twin Peaks marathon weekend at Music Box ☕️🪵 S2 eps 17-end (Monday) review: I was warned the series ends in a cliffhanger, but forgot until the final shot. I think my mom summarized Peaks best when she said, “I watched it. It got very weird in the second season.” Glad to have experienced it this way!

Twin Peaks marathon weekend at Music Box ☕️🪵 S2 eps 8-16 (Sunday) review: Gutted by ep 16, and while character’s reactions feel real, the situation she’s put in feels TV-business-as-usual, which was surprising for Peaks. Besides that, just fun goofy stuff. Now to see how the hiatus affected the show!

Twin Peaks marathon weekend at Music Box ☕️🪵 S2 eps 1-7 (Saturday) review: This upset longtime Peaks-loving friends, but tbh I think the reveal of Laura’s killer detracts from the beautiful grief arc in S1. Waiting to see what develops in the story, but if that was the end, I would feel disappointed.

Addendum to my pondering earlier this weekend about if the 90s were goated as a decade: Was just reminded that you used to have to pay bills by hand and by mail. I’ll take reaching adulthood post-smartphone, thanks.

Twin Peaks marathon weekend at the Music Box ☕️🪵 Season 1 (Friday) review: I’m unsure if the show looks and sounds this way bc it’s the 90s or bc it’s Lynch; I think a little of both. I love that Lynch called it a “murder mystery soap opera,” because that’s exactly how it feels. Was the 90s goated?

I love this observation and I agree with it.

I just finished the first draft of my first ever script! It may not be much, but it does exist.

Guys help I’ve been invited to a book club by some hot Gen Z girlies and one of them texted me today “we’re thinking we’re going to dress up as Stepford Wives to be on theme” I had not CONSIDERED the possibility of there being a dress code, I thought the theme was books?

Dang it I misremembered the name of the protagonist from @colsonwhitehead.com’s Harlem trilogy and accidentally liked a post about Canadian politics

I know it's not true and doesn't make any sense at all but I really feel like I can taste the seasons changing on my tongue, like how a snake smells.

Reading an essay by @bluejo.eurosky.social in Trace Elements that starts with a discussion of what kids can get out of books they’re “too young to understand,” and I’m remembering it took me 10 tries over 5 years when I was a kid to start and finish Little Women, but I still enjoyed every attempt.

I love being involved in community theater. An email I received this morning: "To confirm, tonight I am bringing the death ray, some snacks, and a Bluetooth speaker. See you all at 6!"

I was watching Hank Green’s most recent video and I had to pause it and go stare out the window for a minute because it helped me understand a concept I hadn’t in high school but that introduced so many other questions about how life works I became momentarily overwhelmed.

english isn't for cowards. if you're not saying 'torpify,' that's a skill issue. there's no Académie Française telling you what to do. if you try to type 'pallific' and freak out when you see a little red underline, maybe you're not ready to roll with the big dogs.

I found out yesterday a friend uses AI summaries for their group chats (like if there was a bunch of messages while you were busy it tells you what the conversation has been about) and I’m actually kind of pissed and not sure what to do. Like I didn’t sign on for my jokes to be fed into this LLM.

publishers shouldn’t send ARCs to BookTok people. Too much drama with camera-ready people. They should send them to me, a gentleman’s four with a New Englander’s distrust of strong emotions

All my homies love Pope Leo, and the reasons just keep stacking up. We all just found out Da Pope is also a Lord of the Rings fan.

Potentially controversial book design opinion here: I REALLY dislike pull quotes within books. I get it for a periodical, perhaps most readers are skimming in that context. But if I’m sitting down with a book, you don’t have to convince me to read big chunks anymore; I’m here for the long haul.

It’s graduation season, which means it’s also time for all the chronic illness baddies to grieve the departure of the Hot Resident assigned to their case for the past year.

I am this week going to finish the longest novel I’ve ever read, The Count of Monte Cristo (~400K words), about twice as long as the previous longest novel I’d ever read, Crime and Punishment/Moby Dick (they’re both ~210K). I’ve been reading a chapter a day for 4 months and soon I shall be free.

Saw Dave Malloy’s OCTET at Raven Theatre in Edgewater last night, and short of my first live musical when I was maybe 6, it was my most magical theater experience. When the performers hit their places for the first song and the crowd inhaled at the same moment, and then the first note—electric!

the Chicago premiere of Dave Malloy’s OCTET opened this week at Raven Theatre. it is undoubtedly one of the best pieces of theatre i’ve seen in quite some time. if you’re looking for something bold and spiritual and musically transcendent to shake you up, this is the one for you.
a production photo from the musical OCTET, with eight characters sitting at chairs in a meeting room.
