Breaking: Identity Digital wins .us domain registry contract
Two million domains to transition from GoDaddy Registry to Identity Digital. Top level domain name company Identity Digital has won the U.S. government contract to operate the country's .us domain name. Identity Digital will take over for GoDaddy (NYSE: GDDY), which inherited the contract when it acquired Neustar's registry business. This is a blow to GoDaddy. With about two million domains and a wholesale price of $6.50 per year, it's about $13 million in lost revenue.

46k .si domains registered in September, momentum growing after Trump’s executive order
Domain investors are betting on .si. Will businesses, too? Slovenia's .si domain name saw unprecedented growth last month. According to the registry, 46,066 new .si domains were registered in September, and momentum is growing. In the last two days, about 12,000 domains were registered per day. This comes in the wake of Donald Trump saying the U.S. would refer to artificial intelligence as super intelligence during a speech at the United Nations.

Spaceship rockets past 10 million domains
Combo of low prices, modern interface, and domain seller platform help registrar eclipse 10 million DUMs in just a few years. Spaceship has eclipsed a major milestone: 10 million domains under management. Namecheap launched the Spaceship brand in 2023. In August of that year, it moved the registrar into an unrestricted open beta and had about 100,000 domains under management.

Dynadot shares data from 54,000 domain sales
Eighty-nine percent of sales were below $50, but these made up just a third of sales revenue. Domain name registrar Dynadot has shared data from its 54,000 aftermarket sales in Q2. That's a big number, but keep in mind that it includes all of its expired domain sales. Most of the sales are expiry, which is reflected in the median price of $18.87.

A discussion about integrating existing web3 namespaces with new top level domains. Many top level domains applied for this year have a connection to web3: think .crypto and .nft. But for many years, web3 companies have offered alt-root "domains" matching these top level domains on blockchain-based systems. What happens if one of those alt-root systems wants to integrate with the matching real top level domain?

The 130th oldest domain registrar just got a breach notice
ICANN demands Netpia pay accreditation fees and bring business into compliance. One of the internet's oldest domain name registrars has received a breach notice from ICANN. Netpia.com is a South Korean domain name registrar with an IANA ID (#130) that's smaller than GoDaddy, MarkMonitor, and about 5,000 others. GoDaddy domains now automatically verified with Afternic
Domain owners have one fewer step to take if their domains are registered at GoDaddy. Afternic just launched a much-requested feature that makes ownership verification much easier. If your domains are registered in a linked GoDaddy account, you will no longer need to add a TXT or DNS record to verify your domain. It will happen automatically. Previously, even when accounts were linked, users still had to complete the verification process.

French human resources consulting company attempts reverse domain name hijacking
Company goes after domain registered well before it adopted the matching brand name. NOOUS, SAS, a French human resources consulting company, has been found guilty of reverse domain name hijacking. The company filed a cybersquatting claim against the domain noous.com. Noous.com was registered well before the consulting company changed its name to NOOUS in 2020. It didn't address this timeline issue in its complaint.

This week’s end user domain name sales
A law firm, a food company, and a scaffolding lead generator bought domain names this week. Sedo's top public sale this week was h2.com for $240,000. A domain investor bought it and has relisted it for $3 million. The second-highest sale is an adult entertainment site for $125,000; I'm not sure if the site was included. Here's a list of the end user domain sales I could dig up.

auDA decision could impact millions of .com.au domain registrations
Board approves changes that would make it difficult, if not impossible, to register generic/dictionary word domains. auDA, the organization that oversees Australia's .au country code domain, is implementing a radical change to registration requirements. The group is removing a clause in the registration agreement that enables people to register generic third-level .com.au and .net.au domain names. While auDA recently launched second-levelau registrations, the vast majority of the 4.4 million domains registered are third-level domains under .com.au and .net.au.

nTLDData fills gap for top level domain and registrar data
New site provides registry and registrar data. Ever since nTLDStats stopped updating, I've been waiting for a good data source for top level domain data. It has finally arrived. Domain registrar Porkbun has launched nTLDData, and it covers all top level domains, not just new ones. It also has more statistics than nTLDStats did, so I see it as an upgrade.

Antitrust lawsuit filed against Verisign and ICANN over .com pricing
Lawsuit alleges Verisign has maintained an illegal monopoly over the .com registry. A California man has sued Verisign (NASDAQ: VRSN) and ICANN, alleging that their agreements governing .com have allowed Verisign to maintain an illegal monopoly and charge excessive prices for .com domain names. Plaintiff Jeff Kessler is the registrant of six .com domain names. The lawsuit details the decades-long history of Verisign's contract with ICANN for .com domain names and argues that Verisign coerced ICANN into giving Verisign good terms.

A troubling dissent in a cybersquatting dispute
Dissent relies on a very different type of domain dispute. A World Intellectual Property Organization panel has denied (pdf) a complaint against the domain name CactusPartners.com. Even though the majority made the appropriate decision, there is a troubling aspect to this case. Cactus Partners LLP, an investment group in India, filed the dispute against respondent Kwok-on Lo. The respondent acquired the domain name in 2012, when he incorporated Cactus US Holdings Inc.

Discontinuation of third-level .name domains leaves some in a lurch
People will soon loses their email addresses and websites. Verisign (NASDAQ: VRSN) is discontinuing third-level .name domain registrations, which will cause pain for an unspecified number of registrants. The company told ICANN that about 22,000 third-level .name registrations exist, but many of them are unused. ICANN approved (pdf) Verisign's Registry Services Evaluation Policy requests related to terminating the domains earlier this year.
