On this day in 1996, Republica released their debut album. Packed with high energy tracks like “Ready to Go” and “Drop Dead Gorgeous,” it became one of the defining alternative rock records of the late 90s. Do you think it deserves more recognition?

On this day in 1996, Sublime released their self titled album. Few records capture the laid back California sound of the 90s better than this one. Agree or disagree?

“Pennyroyal Tea” from Nirvana’s “In Utero” in 1993 is one of Kurt Cobain’s most spare and intimate recordings. A planned UK single release was cancelled out of respect following his death in 1994. The album version remains one of the quietest and most affecting things on the record.

Fugazi or Jawbreaker for the band that defined what underground punk meant in the 90s.

"Down by the Water" is still one of the darkest and most unsettling songs of the '90s. PJ Harvey never spelled it out, and that's part of what makes it unforgettable. Some songs are better left open to interpretation.

"Angry Chair" wasn't just another Alice in Chains song. It was one of the rare tracks written entirely by Layne Staley. Jerry Cantrell would later call it "a masterpiece." One of Layne's finest moments.

September 24, 1991. Nevermind is released. DGC Records hoped it would be a modest success, with early sales projections around 250,000 copies. By January 1992, it had knocked Michael Jackson's Dangerous off the top of the Billboard 200.

"Come as You Are" from Nevermind uses a guitar riff that Kurt Cobain knew was very similar to Killing Joke's "Eighties." He was reportedly worried about releasing it because of the resemblance, but it still became one of the most hypnotic openings on the entire album.

Toad the Wet Sprocket never got talked about the same way Counting Crows or Matchbox Twenty did and that's a genuine injustice.

“Semi-Charmed Life” by Third Eye Blind, live on Late Night with Conan O’Brien in 1997. Despite its upbeat sound, “Semi-Charmed Life” is about crystal meth addiction. Stephan Jenkins said the music was meant to capture both the seduction and the destructive nature of drug use.

Drummer Chad Channing recalled that Kurt Cobain hadn't named the song until Channing asked what it was about. Cobain simply replied, "It's about a girl," and Channing suggested the title "About a Girl." Kurt smiled and agreed.

"Lightning Crashes" by Live, performed during 2 Meter Sessions in 1995. Ed Kowalczyk wrote the song shortly before moving into his first home. He later said the video was often misunderstood—it wasn't about tragedy in childbirth, but about the passing of life from one generation to the next.

"Man in the Box" from Alice in Chains' "Facelift" in 1991 was one of the first grunge songs to get heavy MTV rotation. Layne Staley's vocal on that track is genuinely unlike anything else on radio at the time.
