Tramways of Milan: where the f do I even get started…? Solid network (could be more), overall lines that seem to make sense. From afar, things look okay.

While lines 4 and 5 are bland, the same cannot be said about the masterpiece that is line 3. Yes, stations are dark and the wayfinding is lacking - but it is beautiful, consistent and the vintage look is quite special

„Lines 4 and 5 of the Milan metro were so cheap to build“ yes I can tell, most stations are the rail equivalent of unseasoned boiled chicken, gravel on the front yard, stainless steel countertops with wooden finishes on a third wave coffeehouse of the newest Taylor Swift songs.

First Milan observations: - so f cool omg - architecturally by far one of the most interesting places - people just love going out - the reputation for good design stands - good food (not exceptional, not impressive, but good) - everyone and their mothers are wearing a blazer (and I don’t mind)

Love the trains in Switzerland but please start adding more 2+2 seating preferably with proper tray tables and stop with the bays of 4 throughout, I usually do not wish being social in my journey and I like having a surface to put my food/laptop/stuff on.

Yes, the rumours are true. Zürich does have one of the best tram systems out there. Priority is great, the vehicles are neat and clean, connections feel easy and frequencies are great.

What is up with the ramps in Swiss rail stations? I swear they would not qualify as accessible anywhere else: the gradient seems a bit too steep and there are mostly no flat areas. Lifts are rare and anyone not wishing to climb up stairs has to use them.

John makes some great points here and I will add that the „DB is terrible“ rhetoric stems from the fact that residents of Germany are the most whiny and entitled in all of the EU. I am not undermining the problems here, just recognising that they only exist because the bar has been set high.

Today's headache at work is figuring out where the bike lane will go in the area of the bus stop. A task tooted as wonderfully simple by urbanist social media yet creates tons of unanswered questions in reality.

Want to fix german infrastructure? Reform the financing methods! I have said it before: The problem in Germany is less related to money and more to methods. To be clear: saying "bureaucracy bad" and calling it a day is not productive and this is not what I am suggesting. Here are my random thoughts:

„Olympic lanes“ or „Game lanes“ were, afaik, first tried on the Athens Olympics in 2004 and have been a mainstay of major sporting events ever since.

One of the things I wish was the case for my work is for urban and landscape planning to be more actively involved. Anything that isn’t the cross-section of a street is essentially untouchable and even going for a space larger than a planned bus stop very hard.

- 100000 design reviews - Complete ignorance of what mainland Europe has been doing on all levels of planning and construction - Lack of centralised competency regarding rail projects (and an aversion to creating something like that) And none one of the points above is a technical one.

Is this maybe too much? Lufthansa and Fraport are testing a new passenger information system in FRA, in which they cover the gate in screens. Do I like it? Not necessarily. Missing out on info is *impossible* but isn’t the whole setup too much? For now, you can find it at gates A15 and A16 in T1.

Weird a** train (Frankfurt Airport Skyline - a Siemens NeoVAL system) The ride quality is abysmal, operationally I didn’t understand it and the transfer to the old people mover at T2 is awkward - I still don’t get why they didn’t replace the old system. But it gets the job done. (1/3)

Boarding the ferry and departing Paros. Haters will say it is chaotic, it is actually the most efficient practice. Pax and cars disembarked and then 400+ pax and almost 60 cars boarded in under 30‘. As for the vessel, Blue Star Delos, I‘ve written threads that can only be described as love letters.

This is a small Greek harbour (Paroikia in Paros), yet it is now equipped with an information screen about departures and arrivals! It is still in test operation and definitely needs improvement, but it keeps the language used around ferry services, while showing information in a modern way.

I don’t think this question is just one reply worth, so here is a thread 🧵 (1/5) Short answer: no But why? You see, the Bauturbo does make the flow of financing easier, especially from federal/state level down to local level. This is, however, not enough.
