From the statement:
This book, and the show as a whole, represents some of the mechanisms of repression. In the book, it’s illustrated as the distortion of reality through euphemisms and obfuscations. Things in that world are not named as they are, so the characters have to try to figure out how to first name — and change — the world.

As a journalist, do you think the fact that several former Giller winners with eligible books boycotted the award this year is important context that's missing from the "small group of two-time winners" framing?

There's a substantial difference between claiming that antisemitism is a problem here and that it's several degrees more of a problem than other forms of systemic discrimination. The latter is foundational to the zionist ideology, and that's why we're arguing that it was crucial to reject it.

You're within your right, but I hope you (and more left journos) consider the idea that privileging the sanctity of journalism over broader concerns can actually throw movements (and those most vulnerable to state repression) under the bus.

Also fwiw, I'm not clear on how/why interrogating the premise would have been fruitless and I think failing to do so constitutes fundamental strategic error. But my goal is rarely to convince a bad faith actor to acknowledge something that doesn't serve their interest.

I find it ironic, given that the left was previously the most critical of the idea of journalistic truth.

Aliya Pabani @aliyapabani.bsky.social · 03/12/2025
Well, you already know my opinion on doing the interview. The only ones who seem to care about "journalistic standards" these days are independent left journos who don't have the power or influence to shift norms. Imo, it parallels the anti-zionist fight to wrest Judaism from zionists.

He does this for two reasons: 1. Free promo 2. It paints him as someone who is "open to all perspectives and critiques" - the mythical journalist figure who floats above the vicissitudes of competing ideologies to reveal the truth

Aliya Pabani @aliyapabani.bsky.social · 03/12/2025
As with many journalists, your reply conflates the two - Jewish people aren't the target of the "reports", but the alleged "crimes". Treating the former as a sufficient reflection of real-world antisemitism ultimately legitimizes the Zionist effort to construct it.

Aliya Pabani @aliyapabani.bsky.social · 03/12/2025
This has had major consequences for people in the movement (broadly construed), because it builds public consent for no-knock raids in response to postering, regardless of the nature or outcome of such reports, and whether they have anything to do with the movement at all.

Aliya Pabani @aliyapabani.bsky.social · 03/12/2025
I think it's more irresponsible to conflate "hate crime reports" w/ "hate crimes", which lies at the root of the "rise of antisemitism" state/media narrative consensus. There's plenty of analysis on how that narrative has been instrumental in quashing "anti-Israel sentiment" in the west.

One down, two to go - the Canlit Responds response to the Giller Prize and Scotiabank severing ties
This divestment is the result of boycotting authors pressuring the Giller. It will remain a permanent stain on the Prize's legacy that its leadership fought this at every turn - through censorship, stonewalling, and harassment campaigns against dissenting authors. The Giller can't unring that bell.

The boycott stands so long as the Giller retains the Azrieli Foundation and Indigo Books as sponsors, two entities also financing the ongoing oppression of Palestinians and silencing free expression in Canada. One down, two to go.
