Registration of new citizens happens at every naturalization ceremony I’ve ever seen. It’s part of the event. And the first question every voter registration worker asks of someone who wants to register is, are you a citizen. It saves people from error.

If you own a house together, you have to own it jointly with rights of survivorship, or you partner’s family owns half your house. If you buy the house as a married couple, it’s not an issue.

One of my great sadnesses these days is reading about widows whose partners died and had the partners’ families descend on them and try to take everything that wasn’t nailed down. Younger people don’t remember to raft of documents that AIDS patients needed to protect their partners.

We once got three kinds of kidney food, put them out to see which the cat would eat, and found that she would rather starve to death than eat any of them. Vets know this, and you just need to say, “that’s a no.”

I had one cat I quit pilling because he started hiding from me. It was so awful for him that I accepted the shorter life in exchange for greater cat happiness. He lived three more years, to 15. One note: if the cat has dental problems, get those fixed. It makes a real difference to the cat.

Be sure that the cat always has fresh clean water. Check the bowls before you go to bed. I wouldn’t subject a cat that old to major medical interventions, but that’s just me.

First I wouldn’t put an old cat on kidney care food. There’s not one of them that tastes good to cats. I don’t know that much about cat heart disease. My general rule is that if the treatment is a minor inconvenience to the cat and the cat doesn’t take up hiding from you, go for it.
