The question is baffling enough to give even the World's Fastest Librarian pause; it's a Gotham library, but the strange questions here tended to be a little more of the criminally-insane variety. After a moment of thought, she pushes her chair from her desk and taps a pre-printed, laminated sign:

carried her feet to his doorstep, and revealed her presence at his side. It feels too much to ask for, after everything... ...but if she hides it away, if she runs from him again, she knows too well how she'll regret it. The water cuts off. She reaches for her towel to dry herself

moving quickly now that the hot water's at risk of running out. With focus on the moment, it doesn't take long to know what she hopes for. It's the same hope she's held for years, after all, try as she might to deny it. It's the same wish that wrote all those abandoned texts,

not like he used to, but in every way she remembered, in early nerves, in the moments they'd each fallen for each other, in the fights and in making up. The shower's run for god knows how long and she hasn't even washed her face. She starts her routine with borrowed soap and shampoo,

They were both safe, and even if nothing more came of this reunion, it could be enough to know he was happy. But no – he'd missed her, he'd signed her name, such a small gesture that made her heart pound harder than a collapsing building. He looked at her...

and a ragged, raw feeling where the smoke had dragged into her lungs. But she pushes out a relieved sigh and her voice joins in to quietly echo in the room; her hand hurts, but she holds it close a few moments longer, finding an sense kind of joy. She'd reached him in the flames.

Her breath slows to the beat of water against tile, her thoughts slow to a pace she can follow, and as nerves and adrenaline finally release their grip on her, her hands steady. The aches start making themselves known, too, with a deep heat in her palm from a burn she hadn't noticed

It's a longer shower than usual. Smoke is stubborn and so is the spiral of her thoughts when memories and daydreams spring forth unbidden. Any scrap of focus she finds drowns in those old joys, regrets, and days of longing until she finally drags her focus instead to the water falling around her.

If the time ever comes that you need me to retrace your steps, I know what I'll tell you. I'll talk about how I love you and loved you. In your presence, in your absence, again and again. How every speck of sand on this beach isn't enough to measure how much our time together matters.

She's a mess, and his hands hadn't slipped her notice. The shower will give them both the first bit of breathing room they've had since the alarms had rung outside.

It's knowing all the years she questioned her decision to leave, this could have been what she returned to. The house is still familiar. As soon as she tears herself away, she finds the closet he'd pointed her to, grabs a towel off the top of the stack, and digs for the first aid kit.

"I-" Her fingers flutter around her open palm - a sign to give her a moment. "I missed you, Jack." His name, never finger-spelled, but the sign for "J" formed while the rest of her hand was in the sign of the horns. "I won't be long." It's the frustration.

they take care of each other after handling a disaster; it's his devastatingly green eyes, and the flush she feels remembering just how many times she'd lost herself in them. It's how close it all feels, like she could just reach for him again, the distance that stills her hand.

Talking honestly with him was the best she could have hoped for, if their impromptu reunion had left any time to hope for anything at all. And yet... the thought made her chest ache, and made her smile fall a little. It was the jokes, the feeling of safety, even the small ways

"You'd know about tangles. The new haircut looks good. I'm bringing the first aid kit with me when we sit down, by the way, that is a threat." Into the baffling unknown together again - as a team, if not hand-in-hand.

but she did find the words she wanted - maybe words that would let them both step forward, "- and probably get messy. It'll be weirder if it doesn't, and I want to know your honest thoughts. If you want to share them," she adds, almost too quickly to be read properly. Maybe the shower can fix her.

And she lets out a little sigh that has nothing to do with the oncoming relief of a shower, her strained eyes softening, and a crooked smile finally breaking through. She signs, and mouths when her hands aren't as steady as she'd like, "We should get cleaned up before I look at that.

And standing here lost in her own regrets, she might as well be back in that sleepy town. The wall she's been stuck behind cracks - only a little, but enough to push against. Her thoughts stop spiraling in indecision, even if she can't voice them yet.

- how quickly he'd opened the door when he so easily could have slammed it shut, that anger hadn't been among the emotions she could see him wrestling with, though she was so sure it must be there. There's a bridge he's trying to build, she's almost sure of that.

She's been so focused on whether or not she's unwelcome, indecisive about what need to address first and how far to step into the space they once shared... ...She's hardly seeing the man in front of her. In the space between pounding heartbeats, it clicks -

It was far rarer for her to see [him] struggle that way, and rarer still that she couldn't guess his thoughts even in silence. She could [almost] see it in his eyes, still so expressive, showing all the heart the world had once tried to seal away in chains of nano-weave.

Finding her voice had never been easy. Meeting him all those years ago had been the first step of many towards changing that; isolating herself had slowly turned that progress back again.

||The "reality" this person wants to talk about died a long time ago. It's in its death throes today in America, going out on the most embarrassing terms it possibly could. And I guess it's just easier for some to insert themselves in a conversation to whine about it than it is to actually listen.
