Well worth reading.
The logic is sound. Pricing climate risk can serve people and portfolios if the cheapest response reduces physical risks. But when the low-cost response is to leave, investors retreat, creditors downgrade, and the resources a country needs to be resilient shrink as its people contend with El Niño's human toll — death, famine, disease, violence, displacement.

Here is the painting which the poet is imaginitively standing before in this poem. “Landscape with the Fall of Icarus” by Pieter Bruegel the Elder (or maybe not by him, but that’s above my pay grade 🤷🏽‍♀️)
A painted rural landscape in 16th century Dutch style shows in the foreground a farmer working the soil with a horse-drawn furrow. A little farther away, a shepherd tends his sheep. The fields give way to woods and rocky cliffs and then to a bay, where there are several sailing ships offshore. The sun is glowing through an overcast sky, and just to the left of that glow is Icarus, painted in golden brown, apparently as his wings begin failing him and he is about to fall into the water below.

#birdsky Can any of my bird-loving friends help me identify this dove-shaped buddy? It’s been waddling around on the ground nearby today, maybe sick or injured, but it doesn’t have the plumage of the mourning doves I usually see in this neighborhood. (At the end you can see its spread tailfeathers.)

Well, apparently I talk most like somebody from Massachusetts, or anyway someone from New England or New York, with a little Eastern Seaboard, which makes sense. These are the only parts of the US where I have ever lived.
A map of the USA showing by colirs how closely my speech resembles that of the redidents of that place, according to a 50- question quiz about pronunciamtion and regional terminology.

The caption says “You talk like someone from Massachusetts — about 56% of your answers match a typical resident” and the map shows red (meaning most like me) in New England and New York, shading down through orange to yelliw on the rest of theEadtern Seaboard. The rest of the map shows green to blue, meaning not much like me.

Then Petronius in the Satyricon told this story: (which T S Eliot quotes in his epigraph to The Wasteland) wasteland.windingway.org/epigraph/nam...
From the Satyricon by Gaius Petronius. Eliot
(1971) gives this translation:

I saw with my own eyes the Sibyl at Cumae hanging in a cage, and when the boys said to her: "Sibyl, what do you want?" she answered: "I want to die."

The Satyricon tells of the misadventures of a former gladiator through the Roman Empire in the first century A.D. Only fragments of the story still exist. The scene Eliot quotes occurs during a feast at the villa of a wealthy buffoon named Trimalchio.
The Sibyl of Cumae was a prophetess in service to Apollo and a great beauty. Apollo wished to take her as his lover and offered her anything she desired. She asked to live for as many years as there were grains in a handful of dust. Apollo granted her wish, but still she refused to become his lover. In time, the sibyl came to regret her boon as she grew old but did not die. She lived for hundreds of years, each year becoming smaller and frailer, Apollo having given her long life but not eternal youth. When Trimalchio speaks of her in the Satyricon, she is little more than a tourist attraction, tiny, ancient, confined, and longing to die.

OK, this is from a substack post by historian Heather Cox Richardson. She gives her sources at the end of the post. heathercoxrichardson.substack.com/p/august-24-...
Over the weekend, the growing fury over Trump and his administration led to an uproar over a report in the New York Times by Maggie Haberman and Annie Karni about a meeting in
the past weeks between House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner. The journalists said the meeting was about "potential areas of common ground," a vague description that led a clearly nervous House speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) to warn Kushner: "You better not bet against the House Republicans."

The Al data scarcity crisis is getting serious

Twitch automatically opts you into their Al training system. So everything you post, say or film for-and on this platform will be used to train Amazon's Al expert system.
Now people are getting entangled in their personal rights debate, but here is the good news that is really not talked about all too much: The reason why companies like Twitch opt you in is: They need your data. Or more precisely stated: The data humanity produced in the last 2000 years was digested almost entirely by the Al systems in the summer of 2024.
As you might have realized, the we-steal-your-shit mentality got to new heights with the automatic opt-in shit they do all over the place. The Al systems have no data anymore, so they need (!) everything you do every day, or else they can not grow the Al systems anymore, and thus, would have to explain to their gullible investors why their Al systems can't grow anymore, even though they pretended for years this hype will never end and can only result in major profits.
Now that would instantly stop the hypetrain - and this investor bubble is driven by this hype. So they steal from you to avoid crashing and burning right away. That's why the opt-in must be terminated by you manually, instead of being strictly a consent based option.
The Al systems are not actually intelligent. They can not grow their complexity on their own.
Humans can do that, because we are creative. But the Al systems are not. So they need (!) our data that we produce every day to continue to grow. But since it's a scaling process, they need several magnitudes more for the next version to come out. That is simply data that doesn't exist, and soon (maybe even by the end of this year) not even the daily data output of 8 billion people will be enough to grow those Al systems.
There is no infinite growth in a system with finite resources... and the resource known as data is running out soon. And then this shit will crash and take a lot o…

Here’s LBJ on a retroactive increase in Social Security payments:
Top: photo of Bill Moyers and LBJ in the White House, 61 years ago. The screencapped portion of the transcript starts at 07:48

“LYNDON JOHNSON: My inclination would be [...] that it ought to be retroactive as far back as you can get it [...] because none of them ever get enough. That they are entitled to it. That that's an obligation of ours. It's just like your mother writing you and saying she wants $20, and I'd always sent mine a $100 when she did. I never did it because I thought it was going to be good for the economy of Austin. I always did it because I thought she was entitled to it. And I think that's a much better reason and a much better cause and I think it can be defended on a hell of a lot better basis [...] We do know that it affects the economy I...] But that's not the basis to go to the Hill, or the justification. We've just got to say that by God you can't treat grandma this way. She's entitled to it and we promised it to her.”

Margaret Sullivan (former public editor at the NYTimes when it still had one) quotes Dam Pfeiffer thus: I think it’s very on point.
Dan Pfeiffer, the former Obama aide turned podcast host, offered several reasons why the news media so often give Trump and Republicans a pass — even shrugging off outright corruption. In his newsletter, Message Box, he wrote:

(begin excerpt, which continues through the next 2 images)

First, Trump has worn down the media. He is so corrupt in so many ways that the story has become old news. The folks at Popular Information looked at the coverage of Jared Kushner's involvement in the Iran
negotiations and found that only a fraction of the reports even mentioned his obvious conflicts of interest.(continuing exerpt from previous image)

For the press, the story of Trump and his family being corrupt is old news. The New York Times and others still do deep investigative pieces uncovering the corruption, but those stories rarely make it into the daily coverage of the Trump administration. Trump, Karoline Leavitt, and other Trump surrogates are rarely pushed to answer tough questions about it, and when they are, they just feign outrage and never engage with the substance.

The second reason is that the press holds Democrats to a higher standard. This has always been sort of true, but it's been particularly true in the Trump era.

Reporters think Democratic voters care about whether their leaders are corrupt and Republican voters don't. Therefore, a
Democratic scandal could have bigger political implications, while a Republican scandal dies on the vine.
(continuing text from previous image)

Third, most of the media is VERY sensitive to accusations that they are biased against Republicans. This is less true than it used to be, but most reporters are personally liberal on issues like abortion, guns, and climate. Some end up overcompensating by being tougher on Democrats.

Finally, Republicans do a better job of hammering these issues than Democrats.
Plenty of Democrats have raised concerns about Don Jr. and Jared Kushner's blatant corruption, but as a whole, we don't do it often enough, loud enough, or in ways that break through. If and when Democrats have control of Congress, we will have additional tools to highlight the corruption for the world to see.

The F.B.I. began investigating a New York Times reporter last month after she wrote about the bureau's director, Kash Patel, using bureau personnel to provide his girlfriend with government security and transportation, according to a person briefed on the matter.
Agents interviewed the girlfriend, queried databases for information on the reporter, Elizabeth Williamson, and recommended moving forward to determine whether Ms.
Williamson broke federal stalking laws, the person said.
Those actions prompted concerns among some
Justice Department officials who saw the inquiry as retaliation for an article that Mr.
Patel and his girlfriend, Alexis Wilkins, did not like, and who determined there was no legal basis to proceed with the investigation, according to the person briefed on the matter.
In response to questions from The Times this week, the F.B.I. said that "while investigators were concerned about how the aggressive reporting techniques crossed lines of stalking," the F.B.I. is not pursuing a case.

Leave the Kurds Alone. We Are Not Guns for Hire

Sulaymaniah, Iraq - In 1991, the Kurds were urged to rise up against the regime of Saddam Hussein, only to be abandoned when priorities changed. No one came to our defense when the regime deployed helicopter gunships and tanks to crush the uprising. Those memories remain vivid and etched in our minds.

Today, we commemorate that chapter as "Raparin" and we do not forget what it taught us.
More recently, we saw what happened in Northeast Syria, or Rojava. After all the promises that were made, after Syria's Kurds stood on the front lines of the war against ISIS, we witnessed how they were treated.

Today, the Kurds of Iraq have finally tasted a measure of stability and dignity in life. Because of this, it is very difficult, indeed impossible, for Kurds to accept being treated as pawns by the world's superpowers.

The experiences are there. The empty promises are there. Too often, the Kurds are remembered only when their strength or sacrifice is needed. For that reason, I appeal to all sides involved in this conflict. Leave the Kurds alone. We are not guns for hire.

Here's the thing: Miller's mission of boosting deportation numbers of necessity requires arresting people who are not criminals or gang members-people who have jobs and have become integrated into U.S. communities-because there's no other way to get the removals up. But it makes us less safe. Miller plainly places more importance on reducing the totals of people here-or trying to get here-than on removing people who pose any actual danger. He appears to be actively prioritizing shifting the ethnic mix of the country over public safety.

What you have discovered is a recipe not for memory, but for reminder. And it is no true wisdom that you offer your disciples, but only its semblance, for by telling them of many things without teaching them you will make them seem to know much, while for the most part they know nothing, and as men filled, not with wisdom but with the conceit of wisdom, they will be a burden to their fellows.

The story is that in the region of Naucratis in Egypt there dwelt one of the old gods of the country, the god to whom the bird called Ibis is sacred, his own name being Theuth.
He it was that invented number and calculation, geometry and astronomy, not to speak of draughts and dice, and above all writing. Now the king of the whole country at that time was Thamus, who dwelt in the great city of Upper Egypt which the Greeks call Egyptian Thebes, while Thamus they call Ammon. To him came Theuth, and revealed his arts, saying that they ought to be passed on to the Egyptians in general. Thamus asked what was the use of them all, and when Theuth explained, he condemned what he thought the bad points and praised what he thought the good. On each art, we are told, Thamus had plenty of views both for and against; it would take too long to give them in detail. But when it came to writing Theuth said, 'Here, O king, is a branch of learning that will make the people of Egypt wiser and improve their memories; my discovery provides a recipe for memory and wisdom.' But the king answered and said, 'O man full of arts, to one it is given to create the things of art, and to another to judge what measure of harm and of profit they have for those that shall employ them. And so it is that you, by reasons of your tender regard for the writing that is your offspring, have declared the very opposite of its true effect. If men learn this, it will implant forgetfulness in their souls; they will cease to exercise memory because they rely on that which is written, calling things to remembrance no longer from within themselves, but by means of external marks.
