Digital librarian for the Perseus Digital Library for oh so many years. Dogs rock, cats rock, dragons rock (former child wannabe geologist has new interests), being a Mom rocks, and so many other things rock (but in no particular order!)

I would like to give a shout out to my brilliant colleague Sarah(@lepidopterane.bsky.social) who finished her dissertation in CS at Tufts this summer: "Bridges, Not Barriers: Leveraging Hypertext Towards Making Commentaries More Accessible Translation Aids." Even better, it's open access!

The Perseus Digital Library has been hard at work on Minimum Viable Perseus (Perseus MVP). Designed as a static site and heavily inspired by the beloved but faltering P4 (and its awesome users), please check out our efforts here (sites.tufts.edu/perseusupdates) and try it out: beta.perseus.tufts.edu

While the onslaught of bots and LLMs taking down both P4 and the Scaife Viewer has been significant, it has not stopped the Perseus research team and it's many awesome collaborators from publishing both open data and new publications that I'd like to higlight (sites.tufts.edu/perseusupdat...)

Now Scaife is down. Ugh. it is difficult for an application at Tufts to use bot challenges. We are pushing to do something. This is our traffic as of Google Analytics.

Heads-up everyone in digital humanities and/or cultural AI: this is a hugely valuable resource. It does the systematic cleaning and segmentation — of a million books — that we have always wanted to have, for computational research, and have never quite produced in a way that stuck.

I would like to highlight a recent piece (tinyurl.com/mrkx7z3j) by @philologistgrc.bsky.social that looks at how his recent work this summer on the Perseus Multitext Viewer was enabled through not just the targeted use of LLMs but also through the important open data ecosystem of digital classics.

Having recently celebrated another year round the sun, I think one of the greatest privileges of growing older is getting to spend more time with amazing friends, particular ones who so understand your sense of humor in the presents they choose for you.

🧵This might not be enough notice but here’s an opportunity to be part of the Tompkinsia user study! We are looking for Ancient Greek college classes that are able to have their students participate in a user study on Zoom. Details below:

April 8 Perseus Digital Library Update: I'm glad to report that Perseus access has been restored. We will continue to monitor the traffic and post further updates as necessary. (Hopefully that won't be necessary anytime soon, but lately it always seems to be!)

Just wanted to post a Perseus Digital Library update, malicious traffic has interrupted service on Perseus 4.0 and related sites. The Scaife Viewer remains online at this writing. We will update when we have further information.

While I know OCR has improved exponentially in the last year or so and as noted below, people are going to miss feveral rivers, I have to admit my 12 and 14 year old were much more taken with the idea of an Encyclopedia of Farts and Sciences.

There is something very soothing in the creation of lists and bibliographies. Since we can no longer update the P4 website, I quickly created a super long list by year of all the Perseus research publications on our WordPress blog that can be easily updated in the short term!

At Perseus, the vast majority of hits have always been from non .edu addresses. NEH means the Greek and Roman world is available to everyone, not just academics.
