Texas Pediatricians Face Paxton Investigations for Vaccinating Children (Gift Article)
Ken Paxton, the Texas attorney general and Republican Senate candidate, has alleged a sprawling profit-driven conspiracy. Pediatricians say the accusations are an attempt at intimidation.

To me, the photograph was as impactful as the well-known image of Phan Thị Kim Phúc fleeing a napalm attack (Nick Ut, 1972). I’ve learned that the RFK photo was not widely republished and does not appear in most digital archives.

Kennedy appeared to be listening intently to the child’s mother. I believe that Jim Lucas was the photographer. I began searching for this image while reflecting on the interruption of SNAP funding.

The photo showed Senator Robert F. Kennedy in a small cabin in the Mississippi Delta, sitting quietly near a young Black child lying on a bed. The child’s stomach was swollen from severe malnutrition (kwashiorkor).

I'm looking for a photograph from Robert F. Kennedy’s 1967 visit to Mississippi. I recall seeing it in Look magazine in 1967 — likely the May 23 or June 6 issue.

Babe Schwartz invited me to lunch at the Austin Club. Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson stopped by to greet Babe and remarked that in the 1920s the KKK was just a social club people joined because everyone else did. Out of respect for Babe and whatever he might need from Patterson, I stayed silent.

The Kerr County Commissioners did an engineering study for a warning system (automatic gauges & sirens) in 2016 but never moved forward. County Judge Rob Kelly, in office since 2019, said the voters don't want to pay for such a system. Comal County, downstream, got theirs in 2015. No local will.

Did I miss a preceding post? I grew up following New York mayoral elections — "It's the second toughest job in America," said John Lindsay, a "limousine liberal," who lost the Republican primary to a candidate backed by William F. Buckley but was re-elected mayor on the Liberal Party ticket anyway.

Simple answers are rarely good answers, and being willing to listen and consider an issue from many angles before denoucing someone who reached a different conclusion is also something that the left needs to right. Thanks again for your clarity and leadership in such a critical conversation.

For me, it's a real-world concern because I work with numerous candidates who have outstanding progressive records but are sometimes attacked, subject to threatening behavior, or opposed for re-election for not adhering precisely to the activists' preferred line.

She talks about how some on the left alienate potential allies over disagreements on a single issue—and the importance of offering each other grace in the service of broader, shared goals. It’s a different lens, but I think her perspective complements the values behind your argument.

Your call for the left to reclaim economic justice while standing firm on multicultural values brought to mind MLK's "Poor People's Campaign" in 1968, which I followed over the radio from my sick bed in New Jersey. Rep. Sarah McBride's prescription for the left also resonates with me.

Rep. Sarah McBride (D-DE), a trans woman, offered some thoughtful words about those of us on the left giving one another grace to disagree. I hope you'll read it. As I said, without backing from his board, Ryan had no options. His book, "Five Miles Away, A World Apart," is about equity in education.

VMI is Sparta. UVA is Argos, once proud, but in defeat, attempting to survive by appeasing rising powers, headed toward irrelevancy.

Alfred Stanley @alfredstanley.bsky.social · 29/06/2025
Trump ally Governor Glenn Youngkin appointed every current member of the UVA board. No one had Ryan's back. He's a scholar who has made significant contributions to equity in education. Might he have played this differently early on? Perhaps. President Ryan deserves grace and empathy, not curses.

Sparta? If UVA was Sparta, they'd kick the DOJ's ass. Closer to Argos—once proud, then pitiful. Beaten early, eager to appease stronger powers, and ultimately irrelevant in the face of rising tyranny. Or perhaps with the Youngkin-appointed board, it's Thebes siding with Persia.
