New paper out. The child penalty in Vietnam, in one picture: at the first kid, mothers’ earnings and employment fall off a cliff and never recover. 🔗: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...
Event-study plot: mothers’ earnings and employment drop sharply after first childbirth; fathers’ unaffected.

Our new paper using 21 years of longitudinal data shows food insecurity in Australia is a structural income problem. Low-income households spend 30%+ of income on food. Also, food stress isn't a localized quirk—the Illawarra tracks the national average. 🔗: doi.org/10.1093/heap....
A line graph titled "Engel Curve – Total Food vs Groceries Only, Wave 21 (2021, Weighted)" mapping household food expenditure share as a percentage against equivalised annual household income up to $300,000. Two downward-sloping curves illustrate Engel’s law: a solid blue line for total food expenditure (groceries plus meals out) and a dashed red line for groceries only. Horizontal reference lines highlight that lower-income households face severe financial strain, with the curves rising sharply to exceed the 25% and 30% expenditure thresholds at the lower end of the income distribution.

I’ve been re-appointed for another term as Economics Discipline Leader (Dept Chair) at UOW. I’m looking forward to backing our staff, advocating for the resources they need, and helping a brilliant group of economists do their best work. I’m very grateful for the trust and excited for what’s ahead.

I haven’t posted here in months, but this felt worth resurfacing for: I’ve been elected to the University Council, UOW’s highest governing body. It oversees strategy, budget, and performance; and it protects UOW’s long-term sustainability and academic independence. I’m grateful for the trust. 🙏🏽
