#watched SCANNERS (1981) A sketchy weapons developer recruits a telekinetic loner to hunt down an assassin with similar mental powers. If Jedi and Sith were real, this is probably their origin story and a cynically accurate portrayal of how they'd behave. #DavidCronenberg
The theatrical poster for the 1981 sci-fi horror film, Scanners, shows the villainous character Darryl Revok (played by Michael Ironside) being ravaged by a telekinetic attack.

#watched MIGHTY JOE YOUNG (1949) Most of the key figures involved in the production of KING KONG (1933) return for a more kid-friendly remake (of sorts). It's trite but charming with deft stop-motion animation by Ray Harryhausen, Willis O'Brien, and Pete Peterson.
The poster for the 1949 fantasy adventure film, Mighty Joe Young, features the titular character, an immense gorilla, fending off an attack by a pride of lions.

#watched CRACK IN THE WORLD (1965) A scientist fires a nuclear missile deep into the Earth despite the protestations of those who know better, which creates a planet destroying global fissure. I haven't seen this since I was wee. Some okay suspense moments mixed with very dumb science.

#watched FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VII: THE NEW BLOOD (1988) Jason returns from the grave yet again to kill a bunch of college-age kids partying in an old house, but he doesn't anticipate emotionally troubled Tina's fierce telekinetic powers. Utterly silly, but I have a big soft spot for this entry.
This promotional artwork for Friday the 13th Part 7, which was released theatrically in 1988, shows a split image. On the left side is half of Jason's hockey mask, and on the right side is half the face of Tina, the film's protagonist. A knife bisects the two faces. The split face image represents the nature of Tina, whose telekinetic powers make her a far more formidable opponent than Jason is used to dealing with in previous films.

#watched THE GIANT BEHEMOTH (1959) It's Labor Day, and I choose monsters. This okayish knock-off of Ray Harryhausen's Beast from 20,000 Fathoms has its moments, but the creature FX supervised by stop-motion legend Willis O'Brien sadly pale in comparison to those of his protege.
The poster for the 1959 giant monster film, The Giant Behemoth, shows a long-necked, four legged prehistoric reptile (not a dinosaur!) rampaging through the streets of London while tiny humans flee in terror.

#watched STAR TREK III: THE SEARCH FOR SPOCK (1984) This is the only OC Trek film I missed in theaters, which I was able to rectify tonight at a special screening. In home video formats I've always thought STIII showed its budget limitations, but it actually played quite well on the big screen.

#watched SHIVER OF THE VAMPIRES (1971) A woman and her new husband arrive at her family castle, where they discover her cousins have been turned into vampires. The plot doesn't matter in early Rollin films. Just sit back and soak in the vibes.
The poster for French director Jean Rollin's 1971 film Shiver of the Vampires looks less like a movie poster and more like a strangely elegant artwork that happens to have a movie title written across the bottom. The art approach is hard to describe. Sort of art nouveau but with soft details as if illustrated with colored pencils. The center of the image features a shapely nude woman in the clutches of a vampire that's more evocative of a dragon than a bat. Behind and around the central figures are loosely sketched scenes from the film and semicircular roundels containing words or images. Psychedelic is the best term I can think of.

Richard Lynch as Harris in BAD DREAMS (1988). The Scooby Doo ending ruins the good thing they had going, but if they had let him be a proper horror icon ... Seriously, the third-act fake out was a remarkably terrible decision. That's a different post, though.

#watched BAD DAY AT BLACK ROCK (1955) Racists hiding a dark secret get riled up when a mysterious stranger shows up in their rinky-dink town asking questions. Alas, racists are like cockroaches. Can't seem to get rid of 'em.
The poster for Bad Day at Black Rock from 1955 is split into two images. The top half shows star Spencer Tracey standing on railroad tracks holding a briefcase and wearing a black business suit. The bottom half show the villain, Robert Ryan, in a classic western movie pose, wearing a cowboy hat and holding a rifle. The contrasting images of the new west and the old west are meant to capture the flavor of the film, which is set in modern times (post World War 2) but otherwise looks and feels like a western, only with trucks and jeeps instead of horses.

#watched AND SOON THE DARKNESS (1970) A summer holiday in France turns nightmarish for a British woman when her cycling companion vanishes. Each person she turns to for help is sketchier than the last. This film sure takes a dim view of the French. 🥐

#watched SAINT MAUD (2019) A home care nurse comes to believe her job is to save souls rather than lives ... to the detriment of herself and her patients. Welsh actress Morfydd Clark gives an intense performance as a lonely young woman becoming increasingly unhinged from reality.
Promotional artwork for the psychological horror film Saint Maud presents a simple image of the title character wearing a loose robe with her arms outstretched in an orant posture. There's no background art or even a ground for her to stand on, so she appears to be floating in the ether.

#watched DEATHDREAM (1974) Andy, a soldier reported killed in Vietnam, shows up late one night at his family home. Joy turns to dread when a series of vampirish murders seems to coincide with Andy's arrival. Damn. I forgot how devastatingly bleak this movie is.
The poster for the 1974 horror film, Deathdream, is yet another "collage of scenes" style artwork, which I don't care for. A great film nonetheless, directed by Bob Clark of Black Christmas and A Christmas Story fame.

#watched NEITHER THE SEA NOR THE SAND (1972) I wish I could go back in time to see the theater audience's reaction when they realize 45 minutes in that this is actually a horror film.
Promotional art for the 1972 film, Neither the Sea Nor the Sand, features a painted image of Anna and Hugh, the film's star-crossed lovers, locked in embrace while painterly waves crash on the rocks around them.

This movie might bear the most misleading title in cinema. The first half is a melancholic, windswept love story about two lonely people looking for happiness, which befits the poetic name. Then it abruptly shifts to become a horror film that turns increasingly grim and more somber with each scene.

#watched THE GRAPES OF DEATH (1978) As a zombie-like plague spreads across the French countryside, a woman hides in a rustic village and attempts to fend off a siege by the infected creatures. The first Jean Rollin film I ever saw back in the early 90s and still one of my favs.

#watched THE FRENCHMAN'S GARDEN (1978) An innkeeper (Paul Naschy) who makes his money on gambling and prostitution decides it would be more lucrative to kill his patrons, steal their cash, and bury their bodies in his vegetable garden. But that's never as easy as it sounds.
The poster for The Frenchman's Garden is, frankly, not very interesting or artistic. It features photos of two cast members next to a sketch of an arm holding an axe.

#watched WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO SOLANGE? (1972) Not only one of my favorite gialli, one of my favorite films, period. It's nasty and cynical and doesn't care about your feelings. As an existential nihilist, I find the "life is not fair" message therapeutic.

#watched NIGHT OF THE DAMNED (1971) A journalist and his wife visit a dying friend at his castle and soon find themselves ensnared in occult rituals and human sacrifice. The budgetary constraints are evident, but the surprisingly explicit eroticism ought to keep most viewers engaged.
The artwork for the theatrical poster of 1971's Night of the Damned shows the film's lead actress, Patrizia Viotti, screaming while a collage of skeletal faces surrounds her.

#watched WAR OF THE GARGANTUAS (1966) Believe it or not, this is the first time I've seen the Toho international English dub with someone else voicing Russ Tamblyn's character. It's a completely different (and more accurate) plot! Still, gimme Russ Tamblyn ad-libbing. #Kaiju
The Japanese poster for War of the Gargantuas shows Gaira, the green gargantua, and Sanda, the brown gargantua, fighting while surround by an alphabet soup of Japanese letters. As much as I love Japanese monster movies, I'm not a huge fan of the poster art style, which tends to be a collage of scenes from the film being promoted with an explosion of words and phrases splashed in 10 different directions.

#watched BABA YAGA (1973) A fashion photographer meets a mysterious older woman who bewitches her camera so that the people she photographs are struck ill or die. That's ostensibly the plot, but there are many more layers than can't be described in 280 characters (or whatever you get here).
The poster for the 1973 surrealist horror drama Baba Yaga highlights the kinkier elements of the film. The painted image depicts the protagonist, played by Isabelle De Funes, nude and shackled while the titular character, played by Carrol Baker, strokes her chest. In the background, the film's living doll character, "Annette," looks on.

#watched A HEN IN THE WIND (1948) With her husband off fighting the war, a poverty stricken woman becomes a prostitute to pay her unwell son's hospital bills then struggles to live with the shame. Japanese postwar dramas walk softly but punch hard.
I'm not sure when or where the DVD was released, but, at any rate, the image shows DVD cover art for Yasujiro Ozu's 1948 post-war drama, A Hen in the Wind. The top half of the art shows a still from the film of star Kinuyo Tanaka kneeling with her arms wrapped around a man's legs, begging for forgiveness. The half features a photo of the director.

#watched IT! THE TERROR FROM BEYOND SPACE (1958) Well documented as the progenitor of ALIEN, this film has its share of 1950s sci-fi stupidity (tossing grenades inside a spaceship?), but all things considered it's a taught and effective low-budget monster movie.
I believe that the image I have chosen is from a prior DVD release of "It! The Terror from Beyond Space." I try to use original theatrical posters when posting about films, but the original poster for this film is of especially poor artistic quality, so I went with a simpler, cleaner image. This artwork shows the film's reptilian monster with a moon for a background. Nothing fancy, but there are only 3 colors, and the lettering is bold and chunky, so it suffices.

PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK (1975) It doesn't feel overtly like a horror film until after you've watched it and are thinking about it later. Among the most quietly unsettling viewing experiences I've had.

#watched TERROR-CREATURES FROM THE GRAVE (1965) One year after an occultist meets an untimely demise, witnesses to his death start dying in grisly ways. The story doesn't make much sense, but the Gothic atmosphere is thick and eerie, and the locations are to die for.
The Italian poster for Terror-Creatures from the Grave is a messy collage of scenes from the film. Gothic horror icon Barbara Steele as Cleo, the widow of a deceased occult practitioner, is surprised to learn her dead husband has been writing letters to people inviting them to the estate.A woman screams in response to some off-screen horror.

#watched HER PRIVATE HELL (2026) Fog shrouds a futuristic city, bringing with it a killer known as Leatherman. Three women in a high rise are too caught up in interpersonal conflict to see him coming. This film was a big hit on Coruscant just before the old republic fell.
The poster for the 2026 retro-chic sorta-live-action anime, Her Private Hell, shows stars Sophie Thatcher and Charles Melton over monochromatic backgrounds of pink and blue respectively. Sophie Thatcher as "Elle" looks over the balcony of her high rise penthouse apartment down into the fog enveloping her city.Havana Rose Liu as Dominique lies on a bed, making claws of her gold-painted hands as she looks invitingly into the camera.

#watched DISCLOSURE DAY (2026). Emily Blunt is fab, as are the action set pieces, and Spielberg can still build tension and intrigue like few others. I'm not sure it sticks the landing, though, and some of the emotional beats rang hollow.
In this theatrical poster variation for the film Disclosure Day, star Emily Blunt is shown looking toward the sky with the outline of a cardinal over her face. The parts of her face inside within the bird's outline are in focus while the rest is blurred, which is symbolic of a key story element in the film.
