Mamdani’s approach to the NYPD is not what reform advocates expected
Public safety advocates are growing frustrated with the mayor’s hands-off approach to policing.

IMO this proposal aligns with a pragmatist approach and hopefully will have the force of the chapter behind it. In the meantime, I think other orgs must also increase the volume of public criticism so as to help till the soil of public opinion for the proposal's success. bsky.app/profile/alex...

@alexvitale.bsky.social's assessment of Z on police so far is 🎯: • Despite Speaker Menin's obstruction, Z's making good progress on building the Dept of Community Safety. • At least until DCS is set up, he's letting broken-windows policing run wild, making Tisch increasingly a political liability.

I liked this interview with @alexvitale.bsky.social a lot. But the "market-based housing system" - sure there are markets, but there are severe restrictions on what can be built. I'm in favor of the government building housing, but also of it getting out of the way of others building housing.

This is total nonsense. The Feds have clearly said that there is no process for using these cameras to hold officers accountable. When there is a policy of total impunity, what difference does it make if there are cameras recording the behavior. We need to directly attack xenophobia.

People who claim they oppose defunding policing because others don't like it are just covering up their own pro police pro authoritarian viewpoint. When push comes to shove they don't actually care about other people's views.

Policing doesn't help much w safety and produces a tremendous amount of harms. People love the alternatives when they hear about them.

So, you do actually oppose reducing police power in favor of community-based solutions. Quit hiding behind what you think the views of others are and just state your pro-police position. Only cowards put words in other people's mouths. There is zero evidence this hurt Dems in any way.
