I cannot get over how damn good MIDNIGHT X-MEN #1 is. Outstanding work by Hickman and Della Fonte. Perhaps my favorite launch issue this year. Immediately need #2. The menacing other side of the Krakoa coin. Bold and beautiful stuff.

The minute I cracked this thicc book open, I was back to being a kid again - mesmerized by DeMatteis's powerful prose style (novelistic but not overwritten), his knack for cutting to the core of every character he touches, pairing perfectly with Buscema's classic but lean and realistic pencil line.

2291

Alex Segura @alexsegura.com · 01/09/2026

It took a minute, but the entire DeMatteis/Buscema run, with Soul of the Hunter, is collected in one nice omnibus. I got it when it was released and decided I would save the reread, as a treat. I figured I'd spread it out over a few weeks and really savor one of my fav stories. Reader, I was wrong.

1252

Alex Segura @alexsegura.com · 01/09/2026

The times I've written a Spider-adjacent story, whether it's Peter, Miguel, Anya, or anyone - this story is always top of mind, and it doesn't just end with part six. The team barrels through to the climactic issue #200, which is one of the most heart-wrenching Spidey stories I've ever read.

1292

Alex Segura @alexsegura.com · 01/09/2026

Sal Buscema is on my Mt. Rushmore of Spider-Man artists. The kind of storyteller that needs little support - you can just look at his art and understand the story he's trying to convey. His quiet moments hit harder than his action sequences. I still think he - and this run - is painfully underrated.

4388

Alex Segura @alexsegura.com · 01/09/2026

If KLH is about facing death, and Soul of the Hunter is about forgiveness and acceptance, TCW is about LIVING - taking the punches that we get just walking through the world and trying to enjoy the little things that keep us going. Powerful as hell. A treatise on life wrapped in a Spider-Man cover.

1201

Alex Segura @alexsegura.com · 01/09/2026

Get to the core of Peter Parker. Show us who this man is and why he is, without losing the things that make him readable - the quips, the drive, the rogues. Harry's tragic story provides the framework for a classic tale that lives comfortably in the gray areas of life. It's messy and raw.

1261

Alex Segura @alexsegura.com · 01/09/2026

"The Child Within" is, on paper, a sequel to DeMatteis and Mike Zeck's also-legendary "Kraven's Last Hunt," and that tracks - but it's also much more than that (the equally-good "Soul of the Hunter" notwithstanding). It does what the best Spider-Man stories strive to do:

1232

Alex Segura @alexsegura.com · 01/09/2026

I first read it as it was coming out, desperately counting down the days between issues so I could rush to my local Eckerd Drugs or newsstand to pick up the newest installment. Thanks to this story, I probably think about Vermin and Dr. Ashly Kafka much more than I should.

2302

Alex Segura @alexsegura.com · 01/09/2026

It's the kind of story DeMatteis excels at - taking the tropes of the superhero genre and digging deeper, taking a look at the psychology of what these people are doing - their trauma, their obsessions, and their fears. It's also one of the best damn Green Goblin stories ever, which is saying a lot.

1377

Alex Segura @alexsegura.com · 01/09/2026

I've read a TON of Spidey stories in my life, and I think my favorite - and the one that's impacted me the most, in terms of bringing joy as a reader and an influence on me as a writer is "The Child Within" by @jmdematteis.bsky.social and the legendary Sal Buscema.
