At one stage when I was in TV listings we got the new list through and two very naive managers were unfamiliar with quite a lot of the terms, so I had to insist on immunity before I shared my big kid knowledge in the office.

Even as someone who hates almost all redevelopment, yeah, this one is fine guys, get over yourselves.

Even Ronald Hutton, who normally delights in exploding this sort of stuff, is forced to concede that there was definitely something called Samhain or similar in which some Celts did a celebration with spooky elements (but a load of bollocks still gets overconfidently inferred as to specifics).

The forgotten third part of his haunted generation run is as Karswell in the odd but good ITV version of Casting The Runes, its updated setting now at least as eerie as the period versions of James more famously done at the Beeb.

A job lot of BL Weird would be the easy answer (the stone circle one is my favourite recent-ish volume), but for something more modern, this is like Clive Barker only even more so: mythicdelirium.com/the-language...

The best there is at what you do, and what you do ain't pretty (crossover events, 21st century Number Ones).

Tynion's Department Of Truth was very clever in finding a way to do a viable conspiracy thriller in an age when the new fans have ruined conspiracy theories, just as his w0rldtr33 was ingenious in resurrecting nineties cyberspace alarmism. They are both dragging a little now, though.

I didn't think that for a moment, but I did wonder whether you might have slightly nudged it along (I would have, if necessary).

Also, if a tree falls in the forest and we sample it, can we use that in a solitary top 40 hit?

Does this mean I end up getting into arguments over the chart history of Rednex? Perhaps. But that's just the price we pay for maintaining standards, dammit.

I've seen people, I think affected by US discourse, try to argue that Dexys qualify despite having two number 1s because Eileen is better remembered, so I hold the line that it has to be only one UK top 40 hit. And then a further level within that where you get one number 1 & otherwise never chart.

Neither of them technically a one hit wonder – granted, I don't actually remember D-L's other top 30 hit, but M&B's You Do was pretty big at the time. I generally go with Your Woman by White Town – incontrovertible OHW, such a weird sound, and the video even made Derby look cool.

Once And Future King is itself a collection of four or five (depending on edition) books, though, so we're back to series of a series.

Even if my finances were considerably healthier, I know full well I wouldn't actually watch much of this, but I'd love to go round the house of someone who was a proper fan and he shown their pick of it.

This was specifically regarding festivals that are celebrated in Britain! I believe America to have invented a fair few other things, including festivals not celebrated in Britain (one of which was particularly well chosen; July is 100% blank in the Ronald Hutton book that led to my comment).

At the same time, almost anything you've been told is an invention of America and/or Big Greeting Card almost certainly isn't either (except possibly Father's Day, which doesn't even merit a mention).

I went to a few of his Gresham lectures over the last couple of years, he's great fun. Been slowly reading his history of the British ritual year too and the great thing is that when you do get an occasional legitimate pagan survival, it's very rarely what you'd expect.

Gone To Earth is wobbly even before you get to the US recut, and some of the early ones are competent but very minor. Still the best to ever do it, mind.

My Bluesky is just things posted by people I follow, in chronological order, and it annoys me that everything in between LJ and this played silly buggers rather than use this as the default option (which, sure, you could then let grazers turn off if they want).

Yes! I know at least one major Wire fan who didn't really click with it until season 3. Why would you put yourself through that, and how do you know not to do it with each fresh overhyped nothing of a show?

Yeah. This is one downside to the rise of prestige TV, so much more commitment to something people have assured you gets good around episode 5...

But of course then you get into the really choppy waters of 'oh people only like this because they've been told to', and that's generally a very bad scene (though the Celine Dion 33 1/3 enquiring into the whole concept of taste was excellent).

A few of us have ended up somewhere between holdouts among the pod people, and feeling that philosophical vertigo of, do they see blue as the colour I would call orange?

Obviously there has always been an element of different strokes for different folks, where lots of people seem genuinely enthused by stuff that feels utterly uninspired to me, but I've started finding it more disconcerting since Alien: Earth went down so well with lots of friends.

There has already been one hilariously bad screen version of this, but even assuming they do it in actual Crouch End rather than Australia, it does not need to be a series.

It was scandalous and came out when I was 13 so I definitely read *bits of* American Psycho at 13, but it was far too long and had too much about business cards (I still support 13YO me on this take).

I took the small time investment into account and posted about it after one listen instead. Comments suggested I inspired enough mates to do likewise that I'm now feeling guilty about contributing to another week at the top for the least memorable song I've ever heard.

One of the many reasons I wish DC1M were better known is that that panel is such a perfect metaphor: a golden god emerges from the heart of the Sun and you realise you've known him all along. It's what generations of mystics were trying to get across, & what I used to feel when Popular was a club.
