Yyyyup. Had a small part in the English dub of a live-action Happy Science film. Didn't know who they were at the time. Sure, the plot description sounded a tad eccentric, but frankly, that describes *a lot* of Japanese movies/TV shows (and indeed, that's generally part of their appeal as an actor).

Just to give you an idea of how intentionally deceptive Happy Science is, nearly every one of their movies features stand-ins for both the Happy Science organization itself, and its (deceased, lmao) god-figurehead, Ryuho Okawa; they’re under different names each time to blend in and seem “normal”.

Oh yeah. She’s one of the few I’m actively raising an eyebrow at because not only did she do the direction, she actively promoted their latest film, which features scenes of victim blaming abuse survivors. Plus I still remember that one Bleach incident and how badly she handled it.

This isn’t to knock on actors for taking work; the point is that some productions are just not up-front about what they are and, in fact, deliberately hide or manipulate the truth to keep their goals a secret. Incidentally, Happy Science has ties to the Republican Party.

This is more common than you’d sadly think. In the anime voice acting sphere, there is a series of animated films made by an actual cult known as Happy Science. A lot of household name actors have voiced in these; I doubt many of them knew that when they recorded. Sometimes it’s just a paycheck.

People like to vilify playing evil characters in D&D, but two of the worst experiences I’ve had were with players using Lawful Good PCs. One played a cowardly pacifist who contributed little to combat, and the other was a sanctimonious killjoy (both the player and the PC) who broke her own rules.

Lost is a lot simpler than it’s given credit for. At its core it was about broken (“lost”) people who find themselves again, reconciling with their pasts and finding comfort in the new connections they make. The mysterious island and its mythology of good vs evil is just the backdrop testing them.

The complete picture of what Lost was trying to do is so much easier to appreciate when it’s watched all at once; while some things changed during development and the studio mandated the show be longer than it needed to be, there’s a very clear through-line that’s apparent from the start to the end.

Just rewatched all of Lost, over fifteen years after first finishing the show! It’s so much better than I remember. Flawed, sure, but when you aren’t spending months puzzling over what every little mysterious thing means, the peak character drama and emotional storytelling are allowed to shine.
