So pleased I finally caught 'Australia's First Attractive Comedian' last night at Leicester Sq Theatre - and on its last outing. What a show! Elouise Eftos is an absolute fucking force of nature! 🎉💪💃🎤

THE ROCK - A Michael Bay film where Nicholas Cage is a chemical weapons expert, Sean Connery is a notorious convict and they both have to break into Alcatraz to stop Ed Harris exacting revenge on America. It shouldn't work but it weirdly does. It's bizarre and, I have to say, rather brilliant!

THE HOLDOVERS - I absolutely loved this film! Alexander Payne, director of 'Sideways', delivers a witty, smart, and deeply moving story. I love that it's shot in the style of a 60s movie (right down to the opening idents) as well. Giamatti, Randolph, and Sessa give incredible performances! (All4)

GET CARTER - A very stern Michael Caine seeks out revenge on the gang that killed his brother. Set in the proper nasty grime-and-grit of 1960s London, this film is relatively bleak but also tense and compelling viewing. Caine is brilliantly cold and there's a very young Alun Armstrong. (iPlayer)

REBECCA (1940) - This is a stunningly made adaptation by Hitchcock, full of suspense and unease, even if some of the dialogue is just a little dated. The cast are fantastic - Judith Anderson as Mrs. Danvers is haunting. A stylishly executed psychological drama!

My friends made a feature film and it was bloody amazing!!! Massive congrats to Richard Soames, Matthew Highton, Briony Redman & all involved! So funny, heartwarming and with entirely improvised dialogue that's better and more natural than any script could have been! Look out for LOST ON THE ROAD! 👏

MOTHERS INSTINCT - This is a pretty depressing number but if tragedy, obsession and deep-seated paranoia is your thing then give this psychological thriller a whirl. I will say, Anne Hathaway can play unhinged really well. (iPlayer)

PAPER MOON - What a gorgeous film! The most incredible dynamic between father and daughter Ryan and Tatum O'Neil as two total grifters. I can't believe this was Tatum's first film, she is unbelievably good. It's hilarious, exciting, touching and beautifully made. Highly recommend!

THE BIG SLEEP - Classic film noir I can finally tick off my watchlist. The exceptional Humphrey Bogart and the fantastically alluring Lauren Bacall. I don't really know what else to say about it, the whole atmos just enwraps you, even if you don't fully understand it, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

DEAR EVAN HANSEN - I never saw the stage version but this film made me properly sob my little heart out. It's emotionally intelligent, well cast and with great music. I hope it helps a lot of young teenagers who feel alone because I sure as hell could have used it when I was younger. (iPlayer)

You can probably imagine my delight at getting to talk to Kevin. A name who has appeared in countless comedies for over 30 years and always steals the scene. He doesn't normally do podcasts so I was thrilled that he chose to make an exception. He's a lovely, funny and very silly man. Enjoy!

THE ABOMINABLE SNOWMAN - Saw this black-and-white Hammer classic at Frightfest. Written by Nigel Kneale, this curious tale is bleaker and more ruthless than you might expect. It's terrific though. Great cast too - apart from 1 or 2 hamming it up a little - and strong music score by Humphry Searle.

THE BLACKENING - This has some very funny moments. It's an interesting twist on the slasher tropes (the tagline being 'We can't all die first'). It does get increasingly ludicrous and I did guess the killer quite early on but it's a fun, stupid home invasion flick. (iPlayer)

ROPE - The master of suspense, Alfred Hitchcock, certainly delivers with this one which really had me on tenterhooks. Love the cast, James Stewart is always good and Joan Chandler (who has only been in 3 other films) really stood out. It's based on a play, and filmed very much in the same way.

Loved COYOTE VS. ACME! It really feels like a Lord and Miller film (it's actually partly James Gunn). Clever concept and some of the gags are genius. I love how Acme is essentially Amazon. It's mad that this was shelved by Warner Bros in the first place for the sake of a tax loss.

ALL THAT JAZZ - Bob Fosse's musical drama centering around addiction and dance. I forget how good an actor Roy Scheider is, he's terrific in this. The choreography throughout is quite dazzling but don't be fooled by the stage lights and jazz hands, the whole thing is pretty bleak.

AMERICAN GRAFFITI - George Lucas in his pre-Star Wars era. I really enjoyed this coming-of-age comedy even though it's quite absurd how many of these teenagers seem to have these amazing cars. The soundtrack is an absolute highlight!

A MONSTER IN PARIS - Charming and cheerful little French animation with some great characters, nice gags, and lush Parisian music. Do watch in original language if you can, I started the dub and was not feeling it. I imagine it would have totally lost the atmosphere.

The last few films of August were horror so it makes sense to bunch them together in a different post. So here are the films I saw before that bunched together - which makes less sense.

This weekend, I watched LE MANS '66 (AKA FORD V FERRARI) and despite having no interest whatsoever in motor racing, I thought it was excellent. It's a thrilling ride of a story with a superbly written script and a fantastic cast - could well be one of Christian Bale's best roles! Highly recommend!

What is happening?! This is like being back in 2016. Poor Tim Curry! Especially when he spent the last 14 years essentially learning how to speak again. He was one of a kind. That laugh! That voice! Such a range. R.I.P. to another true legend! www.independent.co.uk/arts-enterta...

I always loved how she never seemed to take herself seriously at all, the famous quote being (and I'm massively paraphrasing here) 'People say I'm a dumb blonde. Well I ain't dumb and I ain't blonde'. Also, she was an uncredited producer on 'Buffy'. R.I.P. Dolly, you were really something! ❤ (2/2)

No! Why must we lose an absolute angel like Dolly Parton?! She started the Imagination Library which donates books to children every year and has done for 30 years. She was such a shining example of kindness and how important it is and now she's gone. (1/2)
