AlexKettle @alexkettle7.bsky.social · 5hSo I hear Other Mommy is bad, but it did make me rewatch Coraline this weekend, after originally seeing it at the time in a theater. I had forgotten the plot and what I had thought of it. Which is funny, since it's a memorable, striking, gorgeously animated movie. So thanks, Other Mommy! 010

AlexKettle @alexkettle7.bsky.social · 09/10/2026I was fantasisizing Heather Cox Richardson winning this, which really would have pissed him off, but Judge Pilay winning and needling him also works. 010
AlexKettle @alexkettle7.bsky.social · 09/10/2026Remembering the great Michelle Wolf's streaming sketch show during Trump's first term. There was one sketch (it might be on YouTube) that was made to look like a recruitment ad for ICE. Agents would say "ICE is..." which was meant to sound like ISIS, the terrorist group. 010
AlexKettle @alexkettle7.bsky.social · 07/10/2026Oh, good, we're at the time of the season where journalists I like change their social media IDs to Halloween Treehouse of Horror names. Boo! (Nuss)Boo I say! 000
AlexKettle @alexkettle7.bsky.social · 03/10/2026We want details! A British professor should run rings around a MAGA himbo, thus causing the latter to get increasingly upset. 110
AlexKettle @alexkettle7.bsky.social · 30/09/2026I should, right? Adore the Simple Minds song. (If the NYT did a 100 Best Songs of the '80s, it would be high.) I've liked all the John Hughes flicks I've seen. I as a kid did watch the Ferris TV show with a young Jennifer Anniston. 100
AlexKettle @alexkettle7.bsky.social · 30/09/2026One of the 80s classics that I refuse to see, like Top Gun and The Breakfast Club. They're probably all good movies, but I'm reacting against their pop culture status and being ornery. (Not seeing Top Gun meant I missed out on Maverick and its reported great highs.) 101
AlexKettle @alexkettle7.bsky.social · 28/09/2026Mr. King, I finished Joe Hill's King Sorrow. A novel of the year and the best novel he's ever written. Such an emotional, exciting, elegiac, philosophical page-turner. And it's very much in conversation with his old man's books, especially a big classic I read when I was 11. You must be very proud. 000
AlexKettle @alexkettle7.bsky.social · 25/09/2026It has a playful sprinkling of meta allegory about what it's like to be Stephen King's son. As well as references to the old man's books. 000
AlexKettle @alexkettle7.bsky.social · 25/09/2026This was a deliciously entertaining read, both spot-on darkly satirical and poignant and tragic. Looking forward to Anne Hathaway in the movie. As an aside, I started King Sorrow. I must be getting old, I want to murder the drug-dealing family blackmailing poor Arthur. 100
AlexKettle @alexkettle7.bsky.social · 25/09/2026Not directed at your club, but generally I dislike this trend of readers expecting every character in fiction to be "likable." Unlikable characters are usually written that way for a reason, especially in dark comedies and satires. And terrible people are part of the human experience. 110
AlexKettle @alexkettle7.bsky.social · 24/09/2026I brought up Bartov because he actually understands the Holocaust and calls Israeli's action as a genocide. Refuting Frum's claim that people who bring up the Holocaust in this situation don't understand it. He's a scholar of it! Welcome! I love the quote. It's a great definition of humanism. 001
AlexKettle @alexkettle7.bsky.social · 24/09/2026Oh, sorry. I had posted something earlier in the thread: "Israeli-American Holocaust scholar Omer Bartov would like a word." I was dumb in assuming people had read it and knew I was criticizing Frum in my second comment. 100
AlexKettle @alexkettle7.bsky.social · 24/09/2026Right, but Frum, by still defending the government's war crimes in Gaza, is not practicing "basic human empathy." That's all I'm saying. And if he wasn't personally affected by the Oct 7 attack, why is he defending this clearly indefensible position? Just change your mind! It's not hard. 100
AlexKettle @alexkettle7.bsky.social · 24/09/2026I wasn't saying Frum not care about Oct 7. I was wondering why Frum is denying that Israel's far right wing government is committing mass murder and war crimes in Gaza. There's voluminous evidence. Why deny this reality? Unless you lost someone in the attack and hate Palestinians. 100
AlexKettle @alexkettle7.bsky.social · 24/09/2026One is a professor of the Holocaust and the other is not, having no training as a historian and on a topic the other has been researching and teaching for decades. I don't know about you, but it's very annoying to see this "my ignorance is equal to your knowledge" part of anti-intellectualism. 000
AlexKettle @alexkettle7.bsky.social · 23/09/2026"You mean to tell me that the policies we support for ideological reasons have real world consequences that can harm real people? Get outta here!" 010
AlexKettle @alexkettle7.bsky.social · 23/09/2026Let's put his name on the federal prison he and his goons should reside in! 010
AlexKettle @alexkettle7.bsky.social · 23/09/2026People cling to opinions too much. Especially when it's about news nothing to do with them. Unless Frum lost people on Oct 7, what does he care? Denying reality is one thing. Denying reality of fantastic suffering is another. You're not going to burst into flame changing your mind on this. 310
AlexKettle @alexkettle7.bsky.social · 23/09/2026So RFK Jr is a sentient collection, in human form, of rancid beef? That tracks. 000

AlexKettle @alexkettle7.bsky.social · 22/09/2026Not to mention Trump's government owns stakes in something like 30 companies, so it's more socialist and communist than Mamdani. 040

AlexKettle @alexkettle7.bsky.social · 18/09/2026The director of Jackie, Spencer, and Maria? I was wondering how you knew him, so I looked his credits up, and remembered he directed Lisey's Story, which I didn't finish (no quality reason; I just didn't get around to it). I still need to see his "Pinochet is a vampire" movie. 010

AlexKettle @alexkettle7.bsky.social · 08/09/2026Fascists war on history. Though they ironically got into power because an electorally significant population of Americans forget their recent history of a candidate instigating violent insurrection and a coup. So who knows if we already haven't crossed the Rubicon of forgetting history. 000

AlexKettle @alexkettle7.bsky.social · 07/09/2026"There's no place for political violence in America." Well, the guy who instigated a major example of it became president again, so at least 77 million people think there was a place for it. 050
AlexKettle @alexkettle7.bsky.social · 28/08/2026Reelecting him was by far the stupidest thing the American electorate ever did. Question is: did it mark the Rubicon on how much we live in alternate realities and the triumph of ignorance, and even short term memory. Since they forgot J6 and the coup. Can we come back from being this stupid? 040
AlexKettle @alexkettle7.bsky.social · 26/08/2026I'm gonna assume the better Immigration and Deportation numbers are from Republicans who don't know all the horrible shit ICE is doing, and who it's doing it to (ie, not criminals), because the propaganda media they inhale doesn't report any of it. 020

AlexKettle @alexkettle7.bsky.social · 26/08/2026This is just another culture war issue the oligarchs use to divide and conquer the rest of us so that they can keep their power and money they stole from us. Like immigration. It's stupidly transparent (no pun intended) and it's depressing so many still people keep falling for it. 010
