Out now: brain system supporting "navigation" through auditory (spectral density) space overlaps that for spatial navigation, incl. hippocampus & OFC. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/hbm.70492 w/ @imagingneurosci.bsky.social @uclearinstitute.bsky.social + Uni of Iowa & Newcastle Uni colleagues

My wonderful co-authors (including @alexjbillig.bsky.social) & I have just published a case report of acquired misophonia & amusia following right temporal resection (including posterior insula). This represents the first case of acquired misophonia. Please find the paper freely accessible below🧠📈

With excellent colleagues at U Iowa including first authors Emily Dappen and @joelberger.bsky.social : a very rare case of acquired misophonia and amusia following right temporal resection: www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti... (and free til mid-Jan here: authors.elsevier.com/c/1mAun1M5IZ...)

A case of acquired amusia and misophonia following right temporal resection
Our perception of the auditory world allows us to enjoy the richness of music and communicate effectively with others. These everyday processes are di…

Does the brain always rely on all past information when predicting what comes next? My first first-author paper is out! 🎉 A work with @robertabianco.bsky.social @EdwardHall @MarcusPearce and @mariachait.bsky.social onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

Our new preprint is up now, wherein we directly record from a relatively large population of single neurons in human insula, as well as primary auditory cortex, while intracranial participants passively listen to simple sounds (tones/clicks). doi.org/10.1101/2025... (1/5) 🧠📈🧵👇

Human insula neurons respond to simple sounds during passive listening
The insula is critical for integrating sensory information from the body with that arising from the environment. Although previous studies suggest that posterior insula is sensitive to sounds, auditor...

My first post, announcing our preprint www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... Using fMRI we had subjects navigate to a target along an auditory dimension with no consistent spatial association. Similar circuits to those supporting physical navigation (e.g. hippocampus & orbitofrontal cortex) were engaged.

Brain bases for navigating acoustic features
Whether physical navigation shares neural substrates with mental travel in other behaviourally relevant domains is debated. With respect to sound, pure tone working memory in humans elicits hippocampa...
