This job market has been truly horrendous. Any advice for looking for Altac jobs friends? I live in NYC. I quit my full time TT job in Jan because it wasn’t sustainable — especially salary. Would love advice for what kind of jobs to apply to? People to connect with? Plz & thanks!

Want to go visit the national parks this year? Sorry. The reservation system is shut down, EMT personnel are gone, so don't get hurt or lost. No one can clean the bathrooms or cabins, so they'll be closed. Rangers are fired. www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/arti...

#Medialiteracy is more crucial than ever, so I've created a starter pack of Bluesky accounts who teach & research on the issue. Feel free to suggest adds. @insightersed.bsky.social, @mikecaulfield.bsky.social, @alexisromwalker.bsky.social, & @newslitproject.bsky.social, who have I missed?

My article “Digital Discussions among Women Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints” has finally been published! Doing this research and writing this article broke me in a lot of ways, and I’m really proud of myself for finishing it. brill.com/view/journal...

It was so nice to go to a conference this weekend and not feel like I needed to perform on Twitter. Academic Twitter was so exhausting.

In doing so, I found students were able to more consistently think outside of socially constructed norms for the remainder of the course. Students also accomplished the gaining of additional media literacy skills of empathy, inclusivity, & bodily orientation.

I specifically use the monster films to begin the course with an alternative perspective. Rather than beginning the class with an established norm, perpetuating “otherness,” I use monster films to help students think outside of heteronormative perspectives of whiteness.

When applying for academic jobs, is it appropriate to reach out to people there to network? The academic job market is still such a mystery to me. Also if any mutuals are at Fordham Comm & Media I’d love to talk!

UNC Chapel Hill went into lockdown for the 2nd time in 16 days bc someone brandished a weapon at the student union. This is not normal. We need to say this and remember this. THIS. IS. NOT. NORMAL. And what both lockdowns have in common are the guns. We need to get rid of the guns.

Stressed about how long journals are taking to get back to me 😓 Third year review comes up soon & I’d love to have a little more to share but it’s already been 4+ months with one journal. I finally got copyedits for one accepted nearly a year ago. 😭

I submitted a grant application for the first time! I expect I won’t get it as I have 0 experience with grant work & never had any guidance on this in my education, but I’m hoping for good feedback that will help me for next time.

I was a grad student at UNC & taught during my time there. I often teach morning classes & the thought of being someone in a classroom w/ a class of undergraduates during their 2nd week of classes, sheltering in place? It’s truly nightmarish.

In case you didn’t know, I study media education & equitable classroom practices. I also study how media practitioners can make the field more inclusive & equitable. Good luck all as we start off another academic year!

“When we, as educators, allow our pedagogy to be radically changed by our recognition of a multicultural world, we can give students the education they desire and deserve. We can teach in ways that transform consciousness, creating a climate of free expression that is the essence of a truly liberatory liberal arts education.”

I never thought this would happen so close to home. I always held some kind of pride being from Southern California where we had much PRIDE. But, this is a testament to how we aren’t safe anywhere.
