@grahamruthven.bsky.social , when you’re not reporting, recording, or buying shirts, I’d love to hear your feedback on these ME tweaks.

Nice work! But also, not enough is said about how 30 teams is TOO MANY TEAMS!!! It's almost like we could have 2 divisions of 15 teams each or something...

Unexpectedly!? Dude is out here threatening to increase prices on most goods by 25% through tariffs and it’s a SURPRISE that the CPI went up. Honestly, 3% is a gift.

This is frustrating for me, but of course it's 1000x more of a pain for the people around me.

Thanks! Adding these to my want-to-read list.

Am I the only one who just didn't like Manhunt that much? It seems perfectly positioned for me: History + thriller should = 5 star gem but it just felt so slowly paced and procedural. In short, it read very well-researched a text book. #booksky

Now that it's all counted, the margin of victory in the popular vote was 1.5%. Sure, he won but don't let anyone call it a landslide or a mandate. #2024election

It's the maintenance that really gets me on this stuff. I love self-hosting media through tools like Plex but then some dependency fails and I spend my movie-watching time fixing Docker files and end up re-renting media I already paid for on Prime.

I have a weird aversion to repeating subscriptions (though I do pay some) but would gladly pay $1 per podcast or quality article from many creators/publishers. Am I the weird one here, or is there an untapped market/revenue model here?

Looking for a desktop client for Bluesky that lets me drag and drop images into the post. @skeetsapp.com doesn’t do this, and it feels like I’m using an email client without a Send button. Does anyone have a #bluesky client they love?

It was so good to see you, Sandra, and everyone else! The stuffing was delicious and certainly worth the WAY TOO COLD weather in Chicago.

Searching #booksky for good speculative fiction for middle grade readers? I recently listened to The Unwanteds and this is NOT it. It’s a McDonald’s Happy Meal of a book and I think my kids (and yours) deserve better. Full review: www.goodreads.com/review/show/70511…

We also listened to the sequel (Enemies), which was just as funny and I also recommend. Johnny Marciano is one of those rare authors of juvenile fiction that can be entertaining AND meaningful at the same time. My review here: www.goodreads.com/review/show/70511… #booksky

Our family spent over 24 hours of Thanksgiving week driving to and from Chicago and spent about half that time listening to family-friendly audiobooks. “Klawde: Evil Alien Warlord Cat” was by far my favorite: www.goodreads.com/review/show/70511… #booksky

This team is so exciting. I love Colwill in FM24 and am happy to see my in-game version of him coming into his own IRL. If Tuchel figures out how to use Palmer as effectively as Chelsea has, England is poised for a real #goldengeneration.

Too many game designers tunnel on game mechanics and neglect aesthetics/joy of just playing. Wingspan does both well!

I agree completely. Given how stubborn he has been about other things like running for a second term I worried he wouldn’t pardon Hunter out of pride and I’m glad that he is being human here.

If Bezos had real balls he’d explicitly list the estimated tariff markup on every item in the store with a number to call your member of Congress next to it, like Uber did with taxi regulations

The whole article is worth reading, because it really goes deep on examining so much of what we mean (and don’t) when it comes to apologizing and various social miracles and mysteries like them.

000

Alex Herder @alexherder.bsky.social · 01/12/2024

Good apologies lead to forgiveness, which is ultimately up to the apology-receiver. They must acknowledge that we have taken responsibility for their pain but also absolve us of that responsibility. It can be “like trying execute an alley-oop with a player who refuses to get anywhere near you.”

100

Alex Herder @alexherder.bsky.social · 01/12/2024

“Apologizing is not like having a conversation - it’s like taking a test.” We must accept responsibility for the effects of our actions, which may/not have been our intent. We must explain those actions w/o “making excuses” and convey that we won’t do the thing again in the same circumstances.

110

Alex Herder @alexherder.bsky.social · 01/12/2024

This is old, which makes this post weird. But it’s such a good examination of apologizing and the inherent tension of doing so that I can’t help myself.

This sent me down a very depressing “anti-woke children’s books” rabbit hole and found Elephants are Not Birds (www.goodreads.com/book/show/60...) and now I’m sad. I guess it’s only a matter of time before the author, Ashley St. Clair, is named undersecretary for early childhood education.

Driving through Ohio past this solar “farm” and I can’t help but think this is not a great use of prime agricultural land. Do they at least graze sheep under these panels? Seems like a waste of potential energy joke should fit in there somewhere.
