I’m also a sucker for second person narration. It forces you to slow down a little, but is so, so effective when done right. Some of my other second person favorites include: -The Everlasting -The Fifth Season -Harrow the Ninth

It’s also, however, incredibly beautiful, weaving culture, politics, and mystery together through rich language and imagery. I’ll definitely be doing some research into Sri Lankan history, but the world building worked even without that background knowledge.

I’ve been carrying this one around with me for a long, long time and just finally managed to finish it. The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida is a difficult read, not just because of intense, graphic violence but because of the setting in a culture I know nothing about and language I’m not familiar with.

How many times has this happened to you? Have you ever thought you were all caught up in a series only to realize you’d missed a volume (or a few)? 👀 On the plus side, I now have two great books to read instead of one!

Alex @alexfatch.bsky.social · 02/07/2026

Thought book two in this series was coming out this fall, but it’s actually book three! So, naturally, I had to reread The Golem and the Jinni AND order a copy of The Hidden Palace before I can read The Gates of Midnight in September.
