Im not publishing in this area of study at present, but I’m on the hunt for exactly such works. Keep checking back on my page and I will post about my sources as I build out my understanding of this script! 🏺

You’re totally right! I don’t know what all of them mean. Some are god costumes others are pelts from hunting, others are just unknown to me. I’ve got research I’m doing about this right now.

Highly recommend getting a copy of calligraphy by Margret Shepard. It’s the straightest path to mastering fountain pens for adults in my experience.

If there were a next most striking trait to look for in a given image, it’s how the character is posed. Direction facing, graphical position, what they have to wear, who is surrounding them, all of these things are depicted intricately for most characters. Also, many wear masks of the gods!

Well, the numbers are there for every single person of note on just about every page. And I’m very certain there’s only the one writing system to develop in Mesoamérica in antiquity. Whether written on bark paper or stone stelae, it’s all this highly elaborate script

We’re finding more and more that not many people are concerned with keeping digital data in a readable repository. Archives, even digital ones, need regular maintenance. How many full time workers do you expect are checking large stores of industrial data, rather than news articles or publications?

My recommendation is to build the habit in the opposite direction. Most speakers I encounter operate like always plural, with exceptions from time to time

How do you report sites to local authorities where you are? Through city government, state government, or the nearest university?

I love your enthusiasm here, and Chinese has been very stable, as has Latin script, in the last several thousand years. Writing scripts are the exception to preservation, not the rule. Most artifacts that are produced will disintegrate, as a rule. Forever is a lot of work, who is doing it?

Wrong question frame. We know history forgets most of our lives, so Burden of proof is on why we should expect there be ANY record of these things. Who wants the future to know about the dongle for the widget and the gadget they used fifteen years ago?

I cannot stress this enough- nobody has a long term file archive plan that accounts for general industrial outputs from the commercial sector. They scrap old things and move on. Just keeping track of bottleglass imprints from well known brands takes us several hours and it’s ~200 years stamping!

Very interested in what drives these computers to rework a human ancestor into what so clearly are chimpanzees.

Ah, this can help me clarify. My recommendation for this example is option 1- countable words get plural form , and not option 3-this isn’t specifically undetermined or every choice possible. There’s loads of remarks you’re not looking for. Courtesy at play here too, since you’re inviting feedback

In this case, English rigidly uses “remarks” since the phrase is keyed in by a he word “any”

Really wanna take a moment here to point out that he’s also just, wrong in this calloused intro. We don’t get to claim immediate knowledge of continuity into deep history simply because contacted Tasmanians use stone. That’s a reckless extrapolation. Nothing “lucky” about it!

His birthday? The day “8 Deer!” Thats how we know his “name.” I don’t know what exactly this would mean for what people addressed him as when he becomes king, but this name is useful for tracking his deeds in these documents.

We see a complex glyph with an “A” shape, and a cane motif. This has a chain of 10 beads + 2 beads attached to it. This is read as the symbol for years, making this as the year “12 Cane,” in the traditional dating system. In the context of this page, we understand this is the year he was born.

8-Deer Tiger Claw” is a difficult name to parse. Fortunately, we get his portrait in the text. From Codex Tonindeye, p 26, we see him in dress surrounded by several icons. Top left, see a deer with horns, and a string of 8beads attached to it. Beside it lies the tiger claw motif. In the low left,
Image of codex Nuttall depicting a colorful image of 8 Deer Tiger Claw.

One of the most important figures in Mixtec codices, like the codex Nuttall, is a warrior and leader named 8-deer Tiger Claw, which is incredibly badass

For anyone wondering, the reason I’m doing this is because I’ve studied archaeology for years and there’s a weird air around American texts that makes it out like you’re not supposed to read them unless you’re some specialist. However, I think knowing what’s there is a worthy drive on its own.

Take the Codex Zouche-Nuttall, named after Rockstar Mexican-American archaeologist Zelie Nuttall, and Baron Zouche, who held it in a private collection. It’s better to know it as “Codex Tonindeye” a Mixtec name that means something like “Chronicle” which describes what the text is.

One major problem with studying the ancient writings of America is that none of them are named like “the mythology of Oaxaca” or anything that makes sense. They get named “The Paris Codex,” “The Codex Nuttall,” & “The Dresden Codex” Names come from current collections and not sources.

I’m gonna explore some meso-American archaeology lit soon. This means the Popol-vuh, Mixtec Codices, Maya Codices, other inscriptions of Americans, ancient and modern.
