the year 2000: "pokemon the movie" and "digimon the movie" the year 2026: "nathan fielder the movie" and "john wilson the movie" the more things change, the more they stay the same

we used to have a lot of our own built in "growth areas" for new audiences to come into the scene and discover the exciting work, but those have all dried up the last few years, and havent rly been replaced with new ways in

yeah i operate under the belief that most people like the weird stuff, theyre just not skilled in seeking it out, so you have to bring it to them. i think culture has regressed so much, that a lot of younger people dont even realize there are events like SPX or TCAF (which we consider to be p big!)

i have a hunch that the first movie might secretly be the best, but the fans are just idiots. i think the real answer for best star trek movie is first contact. i genuinely have no love in my heart for the original series. i find kirk annoying and boring.

i was maybe just in my longest run of watching good episodes of star trek (throughout the entire set of series), but i have once again gotten the ick after watching a bad one: wrath of khan. this is making me think that star trek fans were eating rly bad in the 80s if khan is considered the best...

what i think is cool about it is that there is kind a visual storytelling lore to it all, like an inner logic that like activates your imagination. like the army of vampiric creatures, like bats and mutant feral leeches. its awesome.

watched a real good voyager episode that starts from the pov of two disgraced scientists from a species of hyper evolved dinosaurs living on a generation ship in the delta quadrant. their society have lived in space for so long they've forgotten their origin (earth 65 mya) and are in denial about it

sometimes with the luxury of time our actions and behaviors in the past can be elucidated with a new perspective from the present. alas, i do not know or have an explanation. maybe im still too close to it...im drawing more of the m'orb to finish this comic up, so im still clearly under its thrall.

finally finishing up a comic i started like 2-3 years ago that has a moist orb (that glowed) in it that is called "the m'orb" and realizing now that around the same time on frog farm we had the glowing egg, which would hatch critter from it eventually and of which i was calling "the gl'egg."

“slop move” as a turn of phrase is kinda awesome. my friends were saying it a bit this weekend at spx. i think it could be powerful. examples of how to use it: - “total slop move to just be selling fan art at your table bro” - "kinda a slop move of you to just be posting front facing videos”

i quite literally saw this exact set up at SPX today down to the specific character portraits arch and the left/right placement. i did a double take and checked this post to see if it was the actual person on the right who had drawn this lmao

end of oak street was awesome. reminded me if dinosaur attacks was movie. jurassic park as IP has run down the cultural cache of dinosaurs for far too long. hope we get more dino movies soon :)

who’s your favorite Hittite lugal? Šuppiluliuma I or Ḫattušili III? Or maybe Muwatalli II? Tough choices all around.

not to be corny but 20 year old me would flipout knowing i'd put this show together. we've had a good chunk of goats on previous shows, but this feels like a special milestone. info & tickets are here: frogfarm.online/frogfarm13

LOL i found the maps i made for a feature script i wrote with alex swift 4 years ago. it's basically dazed and confused except set on a lake during the last few days of summer, oh and there's a whole secret goblin realm subplot (see second map.)

BUT ultimately speedrunning leans more into the competitive side of gaming that i find kinda mid. like, why does it actually matter who beat super metroid or hollow knight the fastest...those games are cool for their vibe and environmental storytelling. i acknowledge this is a wet towel opinion lmao

alexander laird/frog farm @alexanderlaird.bsky.social · 02/08/2026
least relatable thing for me in games culture is everyone's love of speedrunning. it's neat on it's surface, and i understand why game designers are interested in something that is breaking the intended purpose - it's cool that human behavior veers toward breaking the rules set up for them etc etc

but also i run a small press, i acknowledge that not every cartoonist has the energy for producing a book, then selling it to shops for each thing they want to put out. this is basically my whole spiel of what i tell cartoonists i can do for them. it helps a lot if they've done it before though

alexander laird/frog farm @alexanderlaird.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
i think it's a thing of being hard to master, but easy (and necessary) to pick up. most young cartoonists refuse to even do the 3 sheets xerox thing, and that's lame imo
