Kelp forests are disappearing twice as fast as coral reefs. New research shows something striking: If kelp can tolerate just 1–2 °C higher temperatures, climate-driven losses could be reduced by almost half. www.forskning.no/havet-havfor... #Kelp #Climate #Oceans #Ecology 🌱

Milestone for the MABIT DEFY project! Together with Polaralge, Kelpinor, Pia Dittmer & Berat Tolga Koc, we characterized >90 Saccharina latissima farmed individuals for RNAseq, metagenomics, and biofouling. Next step: estimate heritability of fouling traits Thanks to all involved!

Great to share KELPRIME results at EMBS in Bodø! Leo Minini presented his MSc work on growth and heat tolerance in Saccharina latissima. I showed how thermal priming of gametophytes boosts kelp growth and heat resilience in young sporophytes. Thanks to the EMBS organizers. #EMBS2025 #KELPRIME

Boosting thermal tolerance could help cold-water kelps persist in areas that are getting warmer. The challenge is how to reach a higher tolerance but it shows that it is worth the effort. Climate change mitigation is key onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....

Turning the Tide: A 2°C Increase in Heat Tolerance Can Halve Climate Change‐Induced Losses in Four Cold‐Adapted Kelp Species
Our model findings highlight the need for a two-pronged approach to conserve cold-adapted kelp forests: stringent reductions in greenhouse gas emissions in line with the SSP1-1.9 scenario, and strate...
