It's the week of "a few people are given credit for work that would generally be impossible without many others", aka Nobel prize announcement week. Given how collaborative research is these days, not sure what the point of this prize is anymore.

I could never understand people liking their own social media posts. They (presumably) wrote the post, so it's kinda implied that they think it's good. Superfluity in action.

Every time I hear grand claims about powerful and all-knowing models, I chuckle because, whenever I ask simple questions about myself, they make up at least some details (and, as we know, the devil is always in the details).

I've been on W for two months now. I obviously joined because I want to escape rotting big tech products, but I also wanted to see if I can find cool people outside of my usual bubble; I think that has certainly been the case. The network has potential IMHO, so I hope it continues growing steadily.

Will jemand ernsthaft so was?

One thing that I find let's say sad about debates around AI is the equalisation of generative AI with AI. AI is, however, a very broad term that encompasses a wide variety of methods; generative AI is just one particular type of AI.

When I doing my PhD, I sometimes found it difficult to convince people that we should care about robot failures ("we've seen Boston Dynamics videos, robots don't fail"). I now maintain a collection of robot failure resources, and it's great to see that work in this domain is constantly growing.

I wonder why the EC isn't applying its market / competition protection policies when it comes to research funding. In particular, why is it that many calls (specifically in robotics/AI) only fund one, max two (giant) proposals? That also reduces competition (within the academic market).

I'm not sure I really understand the surprise about the OpenAI/HF situation. If you give your agents, well, agency, and you rely on emergent behaviours of those agents, weird stuff is gonna happen sooner or later. I kinda admire OpenAI's PR machinery for exploiting this so well though.

I agree with Linus; it can be a useful tool when one knows how to use it / understands its pros and cons (tool being the key word). Proper software engineering and repository use principles still apply.

I see some people on here interested in machine learning, so maybe someone will find the slides from my master's level "Robot Learning" course useful (link below). The last time I did it was over a year ago, so they're not super up-to-date, but most content is foundational and remains relevant.

I find robot dancing live demos as fun as anyone, but I ultimately wouldn't call them impressive; many robots come with pre-programmed motions (below is a video we took of NAO a few years ago). What would be impressive would be a robot e.g. folding clothes or taking out trash without help.
