Any results from the favourite new-to-you poll yet? It's probably past the point where if they haven't answered by now they never will...

Alex Mitrani @alex-mitrani.bsky.social · 18/09/2026

Thanks Kent for running this. I've discovered quite a lot of bands that were new to me and it's a good excuse to chat about music. Some of the matches were surprisingly gripping and had me revisiting the results screen far too often. YHF still hasn't clicked for me but maybe one day it will.

OK, but in the seeding round everyone could vote for everything all at once. Not disrespecting The White Stripes - I'm voting for them - just saying that if Björk gets more votes than them against Wilco she should probably be 2nd not 3rd!

231

Alex Mitrani @alex-mitrani.bsky.social · 17/09/2026

I'm confused. There hasn't been a match between Björk and The White Stripes, has there?

121

Alex Mitrani @alex-mitrani.bsky.social · 17/09/2026

These last 4 matches with the same results in a different order (semifinals of björk vs. strokes and wilco vs. stripes, then final of björk vs. wilco, and tiebreaker of strokes vs stripes) would give 1. Wilco, 2. Björk, 3. White Stripes, 4. Strokes. That ranking would seem fairer in that case.

231

Alex Mitrani @alex-mitrani.bsky.social · 17/09/2026

Curious to see whether the artist that places second here will get more than 236 votes. If they don't, the final ranking will be weird because Björk (third place) will have received more votes in the semi final than the artist ranked second in the final.

Alex Mitrani @alex-mitrani.bsky.social · 16/09/2026

Unlucky, but also funny from a safe distance.

041

Alex Mitrani @alex-mitrani.bsky.social · 16/09/2026

That's complicated to prove but also difficult to argue against without looking at the data. Predicting other people's preferences and how they might vote is hard in general. I think Björk made the contest more interesting, I voted against her in some matches and for her in others. She could've won.

120

Alex Mitrani @alex-mitrani.bsky.social · 15/09/2026

My guess would be total votes (for + against) - is that what you mean? This last match was a record for turnout, at least for this tournament.

Alex Mitrani @alex-mitrani.bsky.social · 15/09/2026

What do you mean by regular margins?

She also got some songs remixed by Death Grips, is a Discharge fan and once supported Crass - lots of fun facts about Björk!

Alex Mitrani @alex-mitrani.bsky.social · 15/09/2026

If in doubt vote for the one who got one of their songs remixed by Carcass. youtu.be/d5Uj5osbPKU?...

It was really Nora Guthrie who brought Woody Guthrie back, then Billy Bragg, who invited Wilco to participate in the project.

TRL = Total Request Live, an MTV program? Never had cable nor watched MTV. I just listen to music I like and there was no shortage of good music in 2001 as I recall.

Alex Mitrani @alex-mitrani.bsky.social · 10/09/2026

I was 27 in 2001. The Strokes were one of a line of bands to make popular guitar-based albums (e.g. Nirvana, Oasis, etc.). Making a hit album with guitars is not the same thing as "saving rock music".

Alex Mitrani @alex-mitrani.bsky.social · 07/09/2026

Don't care much for either of these, but I'm sure the Radiohead one can't be the best this year's got to offer, so I'll give Missy Elliott the benefit of the doubt as I only listened to it once.

Coriky were essentially a continuation of The Evens with the addition of Joe Lally on bass. Good stuff. A more recent and ongoing Fugazi-related project is The Messthetics featuring the Fugazi rhythm section - Joe Lally and Brendan Canty. They've released 4 albums. themessthetics.bandcamp.com/music

That may be so, and Björk would probably vote for Fugazi 🤷. Musicians are also music fans and probably prefer listening to other people's music in their free time!

Nanette, do you know where Brookwood Hall / Brookwood Island would have been in Dayton in 1993? There was an event called Dayton Fest there, bands including Fugazi and Chumbawamba played there. I have a location based on facebook comments but it feels very tenuous. Thanks. bsky.app/profile/fuga...

Another postscript. Fugazi always chose what to play on the fly, with Ian and Guy taking it in turns to choose songs. Thousands of song choices reveal their preferences, subject to restrictions (available repertoire). Ratings based on song choices when averaged give album ranking - The Argument #1 👇

Red Medicine is perhaps the most patchy one, with some really good stuff on it but some others that are not so strong. It's a grower though, didn't like it at all to start with but kept listening and eventually really liked it.

Since I wrote this the second night of three at the London Forum, 2002-11-03, was added to the Fugazi Live Series. It features 9 songs from The Argument, 2 from the Furniture EP, and sounds great. Brendan Canty says second nights are always best and he's probably right. dischord.com/fugazi_live_...
