A violent and coordinated youth uprising? Listen to each country’s protesters, not the voices telling us Europe is ungovernable. That’s exactly the picture Europe’s enemies want to paint. Read my latest for @theguardian.com www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

As expected, the youth protests got hijacked by third countries that dislike the EU, what it stands for and democracy When the legitimate exercise of freedom of expression get weaponised to weaken EUropean democracies

Europe's youth protests are NOT one movement, but they share some grievances and tactics - through a subtle process of imitation fuelled by media coverage. This narrative of a pan EU revolt fueled by the hard right & hard left is deeply misleading as claims that these protests are migration related

What’s behind youth protests across continent? These are multi-factorial phenomena that require great epistemic humility and caution when unpacking them. Here’s some of the seemingly common concerns - that should not be dismissed simply because they have been hijacked by violent groups

A word of caution - for @euronews.com Portraying Europe's youth protests as a coordinated pan-European revolt is tempting, and misleading. It plays into the hands of those who want to weaken European democracy.

What, if anything, do Europe’s youth protests have in common? Portraying these mobilisations as a coordinated “pan-European revolt” is not only misleading. It risks playing into the hands of those seeking to weaken European democracy. Read my latest albertoalemanno.substack.com/p/what-europ...

For too long the EU Commission has tolerated border checks being reintroduced illegally by its a member states. This is not set to change as the commission systematically fails to ensure the effective implementation of EU law across the Union in a climate of impunity. @magnusbrunner.bsky.social

Italy and Spain removed the border checks reintroduced after Ceuta. That’s what our complaint vs @magnusbrunner.bsky.social asked for, but they were never justified. They set a negative precedent for the integrity of the rule of law, by unveiling how compromised EU Commission is vis a vis its MS

Europe’s aversion to regulation is now rivalled only by that of Silicon Valley’s tech billionaires. No coincidence. The latter stand to be among the biggest beneficiaries of the EU’s deregulation wave. Europe calls it competitiveness. Big Tech calls it a win.

Praising Nobel Peace Prize laureate Navi Pillay for her “moral clarity” is easy but acting on it is harder, isn’t it, President von der Leyen? The EU continues trading with illegal Israeli settlements, economic ties that risk enabling the very unlawful situation the ICJ says states must not support

Yet another EU government reintroducing border controls by invoking Ceuta as “threat” justifying its checks. The threat is manifestly inexistent as no secondary movements exist. After Italy, Spain and Austria got a free pass from @magnusbrunner more governments contribute to dismantle Schengen.

Iceland's NO isn't a rejection of Europe. It proves the EEA model - single market access and free movement, without EU membership or a vote on the rules - is SO attractive that even a rich, well-integrated insider picks it over joining. A lesson for EU enlargement (impasse), and for the UK?
