it is very funny the full-throated pivot to free market boosterism is getting buried in this particular market since youtube's algorithm tends to favor right-wing content
NY Post exceprt:
Jeff Bezos’ Washington Post is moving to broaden its editorial voice by hiring three conservative columnists after a string of high-profile liberal departures.

Kate Andrews of The Spectator, Dominic Pino of National Review and Carine Hajjar of the Boston Globe editorial board will join the opinion section under new editor Adam O’Neal, who has said he wants to diversify viewpoints at a paper he acknowledged is read “overwhelmingly” by liberals.

The hires were announced in a memo that O’Neal circulated to staffers. The newspaper also announced the new additions on its social media page.

“On my first day at The Post, I wrote to you all that advocating free markets and personal liberties would be critical to rebuilding trust with Americans,” O’Neal wrote in the memo — a copy of which was obtained by the New York Post.

The Charizard/Gamestop news is reminding me about one of the first essays I ever got published: reminiscing about the youthful Pokemon card hustle and an embarrassing school yard trade-back situation. www.defunctmag.com/Essays/Place...
Text from "Pokemon Shuffle" by Alejandro Ramirez.
"But we all knew who the king was: the holographic Charizard. An orange dragon, breathing fire, wings extended, with 120 HP and capable of 100 points of damage, the highest stats of any card at the time. That card glittered in the classroom lights, though it usually stayed tucked in the binder, an orange treasure that outshone the other rare cards surrounding it.
None of us actually played the card game. When you take things like rules into account, Charizard sucked despite its huge numbers (for example, it's weak against water Pokémon). We didn't care. It was badass, a fiery beast and not a cuddly Pikachu.
The only cards that could rival Charizard were Japanese holographics. Everyone in St. Mary's Grammar School knew the flea market on Route 28 sold packs of Japanese cards. Sometimes the art was different, and that combined with the foreign text made them worth more. But then the new Pokémon came out in Japan, one hundred new monsters demanding our time and money. There was no official U.S. release for them, but you could buy Japanese packs of the new Pokémon at the flea market. They ..."Text from "Pokemon Shuffle" by Alejandro Ramirez
"were more expensive, but parents are surprisingly helpful enablers of addiction, willing to take you up the busy route and stand aside as you hand your money over to a gray-haired man or woman who, like your parents, called them "Pokey-mans."
I only remember buying one pack of the new Pokémon, but that was all I needed to find the best card any kid in Lawrence had ever seen. It was holographic, with a picture of a huge, blue, Godzilla-like alligator. When the new Pokémon came stateside, it was named "Feraligatr." At St. Mary's, it was "better than Charizard."
I brought it to school and Alex Montero wanted to trade for it. It wasn't happening. Then he said the C-word.
"I'll trade you my Charizard for it.""

“They say they’re trying to restore what us old guys ruined,” said the Rev. John Forliti, 87, a retired Twin Cities priest who fought for civil rights and reforms in Catholic school sex education.

Doug Koesel, an outspoken 72-year-old priest at Blessed Trinity Parish in Cleveland, was blunter: “They’re just waiting for us to die.”

The more I learn about Markwayne Mullin the more he sounds like an Okie version of Mac from 'Always Sunny.' www.theguardian.com/us-news/live...
Later in the same interview, Mullin recalled that he directed Jason Crow, a congressman from Colorado who is a former Army Ranger, in how to best evacuate sheltering lawmakers from the balcony.

Then, Mullin recalled, he visited a triage center, where wounded police officers were getting treated for their injuries. “I haven’t seen a thing like that since stuff you see overseas,” Mullin told C-SPAN.

Since Mullin did not serve in any branch of the US armed forces, but inherited a plumbing company and took part in a handful of mixed martial arts fights, it is unclear what firsthand experience of disorder “overseas” he was flashing back to on January 6.

However, Mullin does seem to have visited Israel, in a guided tour for 40 lawmakers and their spouses in August 2015. There was no active warfare in Israel at that time, but another lawmaker’s wife, Kathleen Trott later told Politico that Mullin had behaved badly on the bus trip to see an Iron Dome installation and a kibbutz.

Every so often I think back to how Louis Armstrong spent time in my hometown of Lawrence, Mass. The big river must be the Merrimack. From the book 'In His Own Words.'
I stayed with Fletcher's Band from the last part of 1924 to almost [the end of] 1925. We played at the Roseland Ballroom for over Six Months, then we went on tour. We were the First Colored Big Band to Hit the Road. We went All through the New England States. We spent our First Summer up in Lawrence Mass-That was our Headquarters, while we played dances to all the Surrounding Towns. Was quite a Thrilling Experi-ence to have most of my days off and we would go 'Swimming' etc. Buster Bailey was exceptionally good at Swimming. He would Swim all the way cross that big 'River in Lawrence Mass. Of course I am not so bad myself at 'Swimming.-In fact it's one of my' famous 'Hobbies, outside of "Typing." I loves that also.

Only a third of the way through this book and it's great so far. In addition to providing some history of MLK's northern experiences it also pushes back on the characterization that his views on economic equality were only a late-in-life development.

This is a good hypothetical. As far as 1960s athletics is concerned, we only have photographic evidence that one Muhammad Ali defeats four Beatles.

this isn't even a joke about Kirk's death. www.cnn.com/2025/09/17/m...
The Federal Communications Commission’s Trump-aligned chairman on Wednesday threatened to “take action” against Disney and ABC over Jimmy Kimmel’s recent comments about Charlie Kirk’s suspected killer.

During his Monday evening monologue, Kimmel suggested Kirk’s alleged killer, Tyler Robinson, might have been a pro-Trump Republican. “The MAGA Gang (is) desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it,” Kimmel said. “In between the finger-pointing, there was grieving.”
