110 years ago this week, President Wilson signed legislation creating the National Park Service. The NPS was founded during the Progressive Era with two competing goals: use and conservation. Our @alejandrocamacho.bsky.social writes about this in his 2026 book "Lessons For a Warming Planet."

Judges in Oregon and Hawaii have affirmed what experts in environmental law and federalism have already been saying: that the appropriate place to sue for damages from oil companies is in the state courts. Now, the Supreme Court must follow their lead when they decide Suncor.

Gov. Newsom is ignoring his critics, and has called a declaration of a state of emergency "symbolism." Is he right? It's true the Trump admin may not be responsive, but as CPR's @alejandrocamacho.bsky.social tells @sfgate.com, a declaration could still create political leverage and expedite action.

For many this may be lost in the shuffle of terrible actions. This is just petulant spite. The American people should not subsidize fossil fuels at $1 billion to stop safe renewable energy. It’s an unbelievable waste of money, forced on the American people, arbitrary & capricious, & deeply immoral.

My latest pub, apparently more controversial than it should. We must support research on whether nonnative coral can fulfill reef-building in the Caribbean. If it shows promise, we should work to allow provisional deployment of such species while monitoring for adverse effects and using precaution.

There really isn’t a reasonable interpretation that would allow this road to be built. It’s a brazen attempt to ignore existing public lands and other law just to build a road, when another road could be built that doesn’t do so.
