When it comes to visual representations of Maigret, I'm still old school: bowler hat, pipe forever in mouth & trench coat. Have fond memories of Michael Gambon's take on the character and my wife and I simply adore Rowan Atkinson's performance. Have still to catch up to the 1960s British adaptation.

I am so hooked on these new editions from Picador Press. I just don't have the space!!!! (Am still not fully on board with this new Maigret series on PBS. It hews too close to the new Van Der Vark series in its attempt at modernizing Maigret.)

KEN RUSSELL'S THE DEVILS: Watching this sacrilegious, grotesque masterpiece so soon after Iñárritu's DIGGER was eye-opening. Russell's uses some of the same effects (fish-eye lenses, over-the-top performances) to far better and more schocking effect.

Moron #1: Spencer Pratt. Moron #2: Some blowhard named "CyberPunkFightClub" saying he hopes Skydance movies won't have "woke BS." Moron #3: A guy named "Kirk Reagan, Starship Captain"--JESUS H. When news came out that Alejandro G. Iñárritu and Tom Cruise would be working together, most of us wondered what a collaboration between these two massive egos. The answer: one boondoggle of catastrophic proportions. My review of DIGGER: alejandroariera.substack.com/p/louder-we-...

DIGGER: Just realized, as I am finally writing my review, how Eurocentric/Westernized the film's point-of-view is when, in fact, climate change has hit the hardest in Third World countries. What most like to call the South. Not even the waves of migration it causes. Interesting, ain't it?
