I would hazard a guess that a large amount of the red includes people who misunderstood the question and linked ‘Englishness' / ‘Britishness' to diversity, which is itself fundamental to the strength of these islands and what it means to actually be British.

I remember my classes at school and it gave the impression that it was some kind of 'holy crusade' to save the jews from Hitler. My grandad was one of the liberators of Belsen, he said he had no idea what was going on when he got there in April 1945. 5 years into the war.

Brilliant suggestions, I think the “read the book before the film/TV” is as strong of a hook as it ever was. For that I would go for Wool by Hugh Howey, break neck pace and doesn’t take the reader for a fool. Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer is made better by the film and the film by the book.

The death of the social contract is the greatest of the ills writ upon us by the far-right and social media. The promise of Big Society was killed by endless austerity.

Always fascinated by the association of Zurich with nature. I was part of a study that used Zurich residents to test our human responses to urbanity and nature. Zurich was an outlier where people felt more comfortable because of its lack of proximity to nature. What is it to you?

Indeed, the original sin of this circus (Starmer's handling of Mandelson) has largely been forgotten already.

The only numbers that matter will be viewing figures. When the tournament ends the thing that will affect change will be “lowest viewing figures in history”. Make sure you look away. Do not participate by watching. onefootball.com/editorial/42...

I remember seeing a belt that tracked your waste size. I don't think I ever regained faith in humanity. For those who need help with the visual, this is what belt holes normally tell you, you don't need a connected belt.

So he’s a good writer, investigator and knows what good science is. The stories he uses are good and memorable I still remember 3-4 of them, I just think it’s maybe 100 pages too long. Personally preferred his first book, and I will pick up his next one in paperback.

David (the author) famously had a quite vocal tete a tete with Gladwell because Range is the complete antithesis to 10’000 hours. He’s a trained scientist and worked many years in investigative journalism being one of the people who exposed the cheating at Nike’s Oregon project. 1/2

That difference of around 25% in weight is roughly the difference in value in the export market. Now we are definitely dealing with climate change and smaller catches. But I can't help but thinking that the extra red tape on exports might have something to do with it.

Adjusted for inflation that's about 400 million lower than it was in 2016 and a rounding error away from where it was in 2021. You can see that in the amount of fish we're exporting, you link cites 506kt where in 2016 it 645kt. Many complicated reasons why we're selling less.

I would highly recommend Qwant. Functions much like 'old' google, AI features are a toggle switch and the search queries can function very much like a natural language interface. e.g. "What happened to google?" returns todays news.

Like many things, it shows a profound ignorance and lack of respect for our national food. The Cornish Pasty being a thing that fuelled the Industrial Revolution and one of the UK’s chief cultural exports.

Good analysis. I believe the technical term for what the Libs did in Gorton is a ‘paper candidate’. They still come with risks. I think the papers are so hot for this one that you will hear nothing of any other party. Just conjecture mind.

Alec. K. Thomas @alecken.bsky.social · 15/05/2026
I am on the left of the Greens politically and I think Lucas is right. We need to be more canny with how we look at the various battles. The risk of this is too great, some time out of the lime-light will do Polanski some favours and burnham will also shift the Overton window left (albeit a little).

Alec. K. Thomas @alecken.bsky.social · 14/05/2026
The only party that I think will actually make a difference is the Green Party. My constituency will probably never vote in their favour. I will be voting tactically to avoid the worst case scenario independent of who it is.

Alec. K. Thomas @alecken.bsky.social · 14/05/2026
Make room for subtlety and nuance. Burnham will get rid of Starmer. The Overton window will shift left because of this. It will also provide a media distraction that will allow Polanski to regain his feet after the media dog-pile that he’s suffered through. It might be worth more than 1 MP.

Alec. K. Thomas @alecken.bsky.social · 14/05/2026
Fine. But most people think they are on the left. I say this as someone who sees himself on the left of the greens. But the Overton window does move, I understand Burnham will be largely left of Starmer (public infrastructure in Manchester).

I definitely haven’t. “The left vote” ≠ “Labour is left”. I would also point to this poll showing that literally everyone thinks that Labour is left.

I wish I could find a source but anecdotally, a politician in one of the Scandinavian countries reportedly scoffed at the idea that Corbyn was at all left-wing. His policies would be considered centre-right.

Alec. K. Thomas @alecken.bsky.social · 14/05/2026
One of this country’s many problem is a lack of respect for nuance and debate. By a few notable exceptions the Labour Party is on the left and the general public agrees. I say this as someone who is left of the Green Party for what it’s worth. Notably this is due to the Overton window.

Alec. K. Thomas @alecken.bsky.social · 14/05/2026
Not what I said. But, left leaning voters (in that large spectrum) have two choices Red or Green. Liberals don’t have a chance. So a strong Green choice will definitely take votes away from Red.

Alec. K. Thomas @alecken.bsky.social · 14/05/2026
It’s a tough call for the Green’s. If you split the left vote you may hand it to Reform. Lose-lose. You may win and then the person to beat Starmer is out. Win-lose. Don’t contest, Burham win’s and becomes leader. Don’t get the election which could deliver a green majority. Catch-22.

Some models of Flyer (although I haven't had much testing of other models) have a pedal assist button, that you must continually hold down and only works while pedalling. It exists, but general pedalling will get you most of the way to 10km/h anyway.

There are 3 problems with modern politics; 1) People are addicted to change, everything must be new, different or moving. 2) The shifting baseline fallacy. Nobody remembers that small boats were not a problem before Brexit. 3) First past the post.

I think I've found some more by the way. Alexander Timothy Ashman - Loddon (AI). Deborah Joanne Barker - Forehoe (no online presence). Peter John Barker - Hethersett (AI) Gocke Shuler (linkedin profile doesn't match companies house listings). There are others who are questionable but exist.

I am aware of some very clever people who are still using Microsoft access databases from ‘95 to manage nuclear waste stockpiles. Just because it’s old doesn’t mean it’s broken.
