Old Baker Student Center, now Schoonover, throwback! From the 1956 Athena yearbook, a spread on the "O.U. Center." Link in bio to yearbook: bit.ly/ou-ua-baker-athena56 #OHIOUniversityArchives #OHIOUniversity #TBT
Two page spread with b&w photos and text in peach. Views of students in crowded restaurant tables & booths, bowling alley, TV lounge, and external view of the building.
The Ohio University Center was for you an arena for discussion, for verbal settlement of problems of the world, for presentation of vital ideas and principles. But your discussion here was not the forced, adverb-clogged speech of the classroom. Rather, it was the relaxed, earnest talk of the thinking student. The necessary thought and research beforehand and the later inquiries of your aroused interest did not necessarily take place in the Center. But here, more than anywhere else on campus, you discussed, and decisions were guided and lives were shaped. Even when you came to the Center to dance or to bowl, you talked, sometimes seriously, sometimes lightly.Page 2 of spread.
For that relaxed talk of people, profs, and personal problems, you went to the Frontier Room, or the neighboring Bunch of Grapes Room. Downstairs, at the lowest level of the building, you joked more and laughed, because you competed at the same time. In the lounges upstairs you often ignored your magazine or television to tell a friend your troubles, or just to inform someone about how the world crises should be settled. And while you talked and listened and your mind was stimulated, your student leaders meeting in the same building discussed objectively and guided you.
