Fundamentally I do not think this is a viable USWNT 11 against any top ~8 opponent. It requires 10/10, all-time-best execution in possession because you don't have the ability to win the ball back or slow Spain in transition in the spine of the team. National teams do not ever get 10/10 execution.

It's beyond time for Heaps to be rotational in the midfield, but especially not to throw the veteran into a withdrawn role. Just makes the US porous in transition, and gums up their build-up considerable.

Heaps and Lavelle in the same midfield creates very little rest defense through the middle third and Lily Yohannes certainly is not the player to mitigate that. A common thread through the last year.

Just listened to the pod. I could not agree more about moving Cantore to the wing—her natural position—in front of Lucia and then put Hatch or Monday (or now Clara) at the 9. Adrian’s decision to put Clara in after 2 training sessions instead of Hatch borders on malpractice.

Gift started Game #1 and was so bad. Claudia has had moments of brilliance but recently seems lost on the field. And I never understood why he started Tse over Morgan. Why break up the established centerback duo unless there’s an injury? She’s a good sub when we are up (which is rare these days).

The only logical conclusion to reach about NWSL broadcasters and their endless, varied struggles over the basics of visual presentation is that those broadcasters do not care how it looks, and that the league either feels the same or (more likely) gets ignored when it comes up.
