Alberto Reale @albertoreale.bsky.social · 07/10/2026According to the CDC, there are 7 cases of plague in the United States every year (on average). Most of them are bubonic plague, but in 2025 a man died of pneumonic plague in Arizona. I don't know why the fact that this was in Russia makes it look more scary.. 000

Alberto Reale @albertoreale.bsky.social · 28/09/2026The only way to have a clue what is going on. It seems that in Europe (Germany, Austria, Belgium) the situation is still relatively easy 011
Alberto Reale @albertoreale.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Probably all while "deconstructors" were laughing at them because for them, no migration ever actually took place 😅 000
Alberto Reale @albertoreale.bsky.social · 23/09/2026Well, maybe another, better documented counterexample comes from Western Europe 1950-1970 000
Alberto Reale @albertoreale.bsky.social · 21/09/2026Because they self-tested, and so everything was registered as a "flu-like syndrome" 100
Alberto Reale @albertoreale.bsky.social · 21/09/2026Yes, but I tend to think wastewater is the most "solid". I don't know how it works in other countries, but I know people who tested positive at home (two different persons, positive, with symptoms) however when they contacted the doctor for the sick leave they weren't considered as COVID cases 100
Alberto Reale @albertoreale.bsky.social · 21/09/2026For the fact that in the last 2 years, the wastewater loads of virus are apparently going down compared to what happened before. But then, who knows. 130
Alberto Reale @albertoreale.bsky.social · 21/09/2026There is this PJ.2.1 variant that apparently is on the rise in the US. I agree with you that we shouldn't be too confident about predictions, however, I hope that after all these waves of infection widespread immunity is limiting the diffusion of the virus. It seems a possible explanation 130

Alberto Reale @albertoreale.bsky.social · 07/09/2026I haven't looked at the study yet, but it's most likely DNA. I.e the DNA of the bacteria. It's astonishing how stable that molecule is (Although, it's not technically easy to recover ancient DNA, it was a huge development and Svante Pääbo got the Nobel prize for it) 110

Alberto Reale @albertoreale.bsky.social · 13/08/2026Yes but, let's be honest - WHO *knew* this was the way that everyone else was going to use this statement. They had a lot of political pressure and gave governments what they wanted, but phrased it so that they were not responsible for it. 001

He then convinces himself that the risk is low and anyway he can control it. That's not very surprising and I'm afraid it happens often. Problems are 1)that his business hasn't been closed down 121
Alberto Reale @albertoreale.bsky.social · 24/07/2026With a much larger genome capacity than AAVs, but it seems that many people in the sector aren't aware of it 🤔 000
Alberto Reale @albertoreale.bsky.social · 24/07/2026Thanks, that also helps explain why they ended up using a massive amount of virus (with dual aav systems, you need cells to be infected - more technically, "transduced" - by both viruses at the same time). Another thing that is pretty mind-blowing to me is that there are other viruses 100
Alberto Reale @albertoreale.bsky.social · 23/07/2026While any known drug becomes dangerous if you use too much of it. 010
Alberto Reale @albertoreale.bsky.social · 23/07/2026As someone who works with viral vectors, I'm angry with those people who think that you can solve any problem by just increasing the virus indefinitely. They also destroy the reputation of the approach creating the impression that viral vectors are "dangerous" 110
Alberto Reale @albertoreale.bsky.social · 23/07/2026AFAIK AAV vectors aren't large enough for base editing. Maybe they meant a "typical" gene substitution therapy? (Providing the non functional gene). Often, AAVs are not so efficient so you have to use massive amounts of them, which indeed can trigger severe immune / inflammatory response 210
Alberto Reale @albertoreale.bsky.social · 23/07/2026Because of professional reasons, I was looking for the type of viral vector they had used but at first I couldn't find it. It might be an adeno associated vector (at least that's the expertise of the involved scientist), but that doesn't fit much with the "gene editing" label 101
Alberto Reale @albertoreale.bsky.social · 23/07/2026Most countries do it in Europe and we're not even very left-wing. 000
Alberto Reale @albertoreale.bsky.social · 23/07/2026Just looking at wastewater maps, it seems that now you have relatively "localized" outbreaks (like in Texas for example). If they remain localized this also looks somehow like a new pattern, doesn't it? 110

Alberto Reale @albertoreale.bsky.social · 22/07/2026Yes but the dialogue lines often are out of meter without the non-dialogue ones. So, how should they pronounce them? In meter or in prose? 😄 010
Alberto Reale @albertoreale.bsky.social · 22/07/2026The problem is that their lines in the original are in meter, BUT the meter often doesn't make sense without the context words (those not spoken by the characters), so the actors would end up pronouncing chunks of hexameters. This would make a nice piece of surrealist cinema, though. 140
