Alberto Muti @albertomuti.bsky.social · 23/09/2026I love that you know the old in-joke about Molise not existing. 111
Alberto Muti @albertomuti.bsky.social · 09/09/2026That's a moving way to put it. I take confort that - in calling bullshit on St. Anselm - a medieval monk just went "just because you can imagine something very big it doesn't mean it's true", and that applies to the basilisk as much as god. Thanks, Gaunilo! 160
Alberto Muti @albertomuti.bsky.social · 09/09/2026Nobody with an even passing education in philosophy would take the basilisk thingie seriously; and yet, the guys who tell us the humanities are useless seem to fall all the way for it... 170
Alberto Muti @albertomuti.bsky.social · 17/08/2026I have rebalanced that by gifting my wife a chinese cleaver, so she is the one with the more threatening knife on the block. 130
Alberto Muti @albertomuti.bsky.social · 10/08/2026*checks t-shirt* Phew, I'm good today. I think there's a bit more to it than that. 000
Alberto Muti @albertomuti.bsky.social · 10/08/2026While I have often thought that some british and french train habits are beastly, this is - unfortunately - the Trenitalia experience I know. 110
Alberto Muti @albertomuti.bsky.social · 10/08/2026Oh these are not the kids. The kids don't seem to care much about Harry Potter. These are adults. 020
Alberto Muti @albertomuti.bsky.social · 07/08/2026The flipside is, it's the Odyssey. People *know* what happened to Troy. Nolan can leverage that, and he does. 000
Alberto Muti @albertomuti.bsky.social · 05/08/2026This is just every italian in every conversation on any topic? 000
Alberto Muti @albertomuti.bsky.social · 04/08/2026This is silly - whether one likes it or not, there's a whole history of left-wing activism and thought, incl communist parties in Europe (often major parties), long independent of Moscow. Greens capture some of that today, but it's hardly the resurgence of something thought dead like Apartheid. 110
Alberto Muti @albertomuti.bsky.social · 03/08/2026A problem is - in my incomplete understanding - how "final" sorting is. Italy (where I studied) sorts at 12, BUT access to uni is open, and I know plenty who did poorly in high school or went to a vocational route, only to change plans at 18, go to uni and become a brilliant student. 010
Alberto Muti @albertomuti.bsky.social · 21/07/2026I have no idea how good the english translations of the novels are, but if they keep a tenth of the charm of the original, they're well worth a read. 010

Alberto Muti @albertomuti.bsky.social · 16/07/2026Ok, I used a wrong shorthand. But MPs and Ministers during the Starmer govt expressed outright disdain of the higher education field; while steel was not just discussed as a small but critical nat'l industry. It's not unfair to think there's something ideological/identitarian at play. 000
Alberto Muti @albertomuti.bsky.social · 16/07/2026This is entirely true; but also, the rhetoric of the starmer govt on the two sectors and declarations by various labour ministers and MPs seems to show a deeper divide than that, to the point that reducing the difference to economics may be reductive. 110
Alberto Muti @albertomuti.bsky.social · 13/07/2026Also he may have had additional habits that would contribute to poor heart health, considering the very persistent rumors that have been going around for years in certain minority communities. 000
Alberto Muti @albertomuti.bsky.social · 09/07/2026oh we can EASILY find areas of london where that barely buys you a one-bed; but no sane person would argue that's the standard for buying a house "in London". 100
Alberto Muti @albertomuti.bsky.social · 08/07/2026As someone who lives in london and owns a modest house, no, 1.5 million buys you WAY MORE than a modest house, come on. Make the argument you want, but that claim is taking the piss. 1541
Alberto Muti @albertomuti.bsky.social · 02/07/2026A sensible rewrite: "Giving legal and political recognition to people who are born in a country results in much lower crime than disenfranchising them". WHODATHUNK 040

Alberto Muti @albertomuti.bsky.social · 17/06/2026A few years ago I wanted to do a project on benefits E3+3 promised to Iran before the JCPOA, and if they were delivered - solar panel plants, investment , etc. On first look, that vanished even before US left. It was intended to inform possible future negotiations: why would they believe us again? 110
Alberto Muti @albertomuti.bsky.social · 16/06/2026Also, having lived in a country where routinely it gets both very hot (40, so over "100" degrees), and pretty damn cold (below zero), I find the supposed progression of F completely useless. Oh is "in the twenties" supposed to be cold? 000
Alberto Muti @albertomuti.bsky.social · 16/06/2026Somebody commented that Esther Gay's multiple pronouncements on this were sounding increasingly like "this wouldn't have happened if the internet didn't turn her trans", and yikes. 010
Alberto Muti @albertomuti.bsky.social · 15/06/2026Visited the Cathedral in 2017 - we entered during liturgy, and even as an atheist it was majestic and moving. This is heartbreaking. We were touring Kyiv with the colleagues who were hosting us for a workshop, who at the time told us of their time taking part in the Euromaidan protests. 000

Alberto Muti @albertomuti.bsky.social · 10/06/2026How? He absolutely caved in and joined the far right on demonising trans people + stripping them of their rights. He's done more to harm minorities in britain and to support far right battles than even Mahmood at this point. 1133
Alberto Muti @albertomuti.bsky.social · 10/06/2026VERY weird to think that Streeting may "take on" the far right, let alone aggressively, considering that he's presided on one of the dossiers that the far right has relentlessly pushed on - trans rights - and he's actually joined in enthusiastically on stripping people of their rights at every turn. 030

Now that you have joined the EHRC board, I'd like you to comment on the EHRC guidance on same-sex spaces that was published yesterday. This is the biggest step back on minority rights seen in Europe in decades, and people who have leverage need to fight it. 010
