My preview of Spain-Austria.
A screenshot from an episode of The Simpsons. A globe of the world is on a field in a crowded stadium as if it were a soccer ball. Caption reads: “This match will determine once and for all, which Habsburg branch is greatest: Spain or Austria!”

Alright, since Texas gave me one of my first jobs out of grad school, here's a donation of $41.38 (plus fees) in honor of the final score in the 2006 Rose Bowl, which remains one of, if not the best, games I've ever seen.

Hi everyone! My book, Egypt's Mediterranean, came out with @ucpress.bsky.social on Tuesday 💙💛 It's a new look at how Egypt fit into the political economy of the Ottoman Empire and eastern Mediterranean. Please enjoy the *beautiful* cover art by Mohamed Gohar (@mohamed.gohar on IG)

"We owe the Cassandras a great debt for being the first among us to raise their voices. It is largely because of them that we are not alone when we do; that there remains a critical mass of people, at all levels of society, resolutely opposed to our authoritarian drift."

The Americans Who Saw All This Coming—but Were Ignored and Maligned
Call them the Cassandras: the people—mostly not white and male—who smelled the fascism all over Trump from jump street. Why were they “alarmists,” and how did “anti-alarmism” become cool?

I will be damned if I allow a bunch of Confederate-waving January 6th apologists give the American people a lecture on flag waving. There is ZERO reason to enter an argument about patriotism with people who still worship traitors to America 150+ years later. They. Are. Breaking. The. Law.

Sign of the times: watching the Mexico-Turkey friendly being played in North Carolina. The Spanish-language announcers note that there not might be as many fans as expected in the stands "given the situation in this country right now."

Musk should be asked about this in every interview he does now and forever. To ignore it is a dereliction of duty. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/30/o...
There is one place, however, where Musk, with the help of his minions, achieved his goals. He did indeed shred U.S.A.I.D. Though a rump operation is now operating inside the State Department, the administration says that it has terminated more than 80 percent of U.S.A.I.D. grants. Brooke Nichols, an associate professor of global health at Boston University, has estimated that these cuts have already resulted in about 300,000 deaths, most of them of children, and will most likely lead to significantly more by the end of the year. That is what Musk’s foray into politics accomplished.

My favorite college football podcast is doing its annual charity drive for New American Pathways, a non-profit that provides refugee resettlement services. I donated one dollar for each victory (48) that UC Davis has over Sac State. @edsbs.bsky.social @hollyanderson.bsky.social
