PhD student in philosophy of biology, but truly an aspiring 19th century naturalist. I like prehistory and puzzles and taking photos of birds 🦆.

Scientifically, a raven has 17 primary wing feathers, the big ones at the end of the wing. They are called pinion feathers. A crow has 16. So, the difference between a raven and a crow is only a matter of a pinion.

Happy #WorldPeatlandsDay! 😍
A playful meme reading: “Just because your child is smiling at their phone doesn’t mean they have a boyfriend/girlfriend. Maybe they’re just looking at pictures of peatlands.” Below, a collage shows beautiful peatland habitats: shimmering bog pools, vivid moss gathered in hands, a Marsh Fritillary butterfly nestled in sphagnum moss, and wide wet peatland under open skies.

A tree sparrow is speaking: "Artistic creation shouldn't be considered carelessly! Good art is made deliberately! With emotion! Physical exertion! If you aren't crying or bleeding by the end, you'd better look into another lifestyle...". We see a class of birds with piles of sticks and a big banner that reads "Intro to nest building" made out of twigs. The teacher continues: "Ok! Does everyone have their bundle of soft moss?"

The Seed Song
A chipping sparrow is humming to itself while hopping around a forest floor in early spring. New plants are sprouting through fallen years from the year before. Zoom in on the bird in the second panel as it sings "I never had a seed that I didn't like / dry ones hard ones sharp ones even taste alright / if you don't eat them fast, they turn into a grass! / if you let them be, they become a tree!" It stops to munch on some morsels of sparrow food, whatever that is, at the base of a plant that towers over its head. It looks up and up. The final frame is zoomed out to see the top of the plant, which is a trillium. The sparrow cheerily says "Good morning!". And that's how you make a comic!

I'm very excited to take part in the workshop 'Lineages, Complexity, and Evolution' at the Universidad de Oviedo. I'll be presenting a paper that Pierrick Bourrat and I have been working on. Looking forward to engaging with some fantastic philosophers of biology.

It is publication day for The Organism-Environment Pairing (@mitpress.bsky.social)! This 📗 has been deeply formative for me as a scholar, and it owes so much to so many wonderful people. I truly hope it finds many readers! mitpress.mit.edu/978026205282... #booksky #philsci #histsci #philsky #evosky
Photograph of the book The Organism–Environment Pairing: A Historical and Philosophical Reappraisal (MIT Press, 2026) displayed on a small wooden easel. The green cover features multicolored title text and an image of a monarch butterfly resting on pink milkweed flowers, layered over a larger pale-green butterfly silhouette. The spine, visible at an angle, repeats the title and author’s name, Alejandro Fábregas-Tejeda. Softly blurred purple-and-white flowers appear in the background.

This is the vibrant, colourful, comicbook-style artwork from the magnificent James Stokoe. It broadly shows a tall tropical island, swathed in various animals, adrift in turquoise water and beneath bright skies filled with endless flocks of white birds. The skies in the background gradate from turquoise down to a yellow horizon, hiding behind billowy clouds. In the background is a second rocky island with a spindly lighthouse perched atop. Close up in the foreground is a cheeky-looking hippo facing out towards the scene, but with the right side of its face visible, and a few scraggly birds perched on its nose. Then the island itself appears to be a combination of manmade structures carved into its rock, vibrant greenery, and then it appears to blend into the body of an enormous crocodile which extends out of its lower left side, evidenced by the eyes and snout that are visible. This itself is decked out with the body of an equally enormous orange/golden snake which loops back and forth over it. Moored up at a dock on he island is a little ship. Around the island are other colossal animals, including hippos, a pair of dugongs (also known as the manatee), and up at the top near the tallest building, is another enormous crocodile poking out from behind and gazing out to the left.

There the band's logo "The Longest Johns" and album title "Ends of the Earth" also appear. Below is additional text saying "OUT NOW"

Intelligent
2 Blue Jays conversing in a spruce. First Jay asks "What if we aren't the only intelligent species in the universe? What would they be like?" The second replies "Let's see... they'd need to be good at problem solving, and to have advanced communication skills, a social structure, self-awareness..." "... the ability to fly?" continues the first Jay. "That goes without saying!" exclaims the second. The first states confidently "And a strong beak, of course". To which the second responds rhetorically "How could you do anything intelligent without a strong beak?"

Swallows and anecdotes
I am lucky enough to see birds almost every day: pigeons, sparrows, starlings, wood pigeons and collared doves, and the occasional gull in winter; and also swallows and swifts when summer comes.

In the upcoming year fight for a new world and a life worth living
an illustration. Two figures sit in the woods on a starry night and look at each other. One sits on a rock with long flowy hair holding pan pipes. Another sits on the ground gaving up as a copy of a book flutters from their hand. The illustration is surrounded by a decorative border. Text reads "We didn't go to work today and we won't be going tomorrow. We choose to live our lives for Pleasure, and not for toil and sorrow." There is a decorative circle a and a trans symbol.

An oldie that I'm thinking about a lot while I try to take warbler photos at Biggest Week in Ohio.
A comic titled "A Guide to Bird Photography." On the left are images of the photo you want, and on the right are images of the photo you'll get. In the first row, the photo you want is a well-framed shot (there's a gorgeous mourning warbler standing on a branch). In the second row, the photo you'll get: an action shot (the bird is a fleeing blur). Next, you want a bird in sharp focus (an indigo bunting perched). But you'll get exquisite leaf detail (the bird is blurry but the leaves are in perfect focus). In the third row, you want a striking portrait (a Swainson's hawk looking at the camera). But you'll get... why (a kingbird screaming as it flies in front of the hawk and blocks the shot). Finally, the photo you want is pure elegance (a great blue heron standing in a marsh). But the photo you get is a pooping heron - maybe I can fix this in post.
