Alan Rockefeller @alanrockefeller.bsky.social · 11/08/2026Pectiantia pentandra in 365 nm UV light. Someone handed me this leaf during a UV night hike above Boulder, Colorado the other night and I was blown away by its beauty. The bright yellow fluorescence is due to the presence of quercetin and kaempferol glycosides. 0255
Alan Rockefeller @alanrockefeller.bsky.social · 23/06/2026It also helps to have a colorful leaf in the background, though I also like black. Dara uses focus stacking with flash for most of his shots, though this one was a single shot at f/22. 0110
Alan Rockefeller @alanrockefeller.bsky.social · 23/06/2026A few of his tips I found most useful: shoot the face of an insect from below, looking up at it. The back is what you need for ID, but the face is where the personality is. Pick moths up off the moth sheet with a leaf - they look much nicer on a leaf than on the sheet. 070
Alan Rockefeller @alanrockefeller.bsky.social · 23/06/2026I learned a lot from insect photographer Dara Ojo, who joined our recent trip to Costa Rica and helped me take this picture of Copaxa decrescens. Alan Rockefeller @alanrockefeller.bsky.social · 09/06/2026I brought a 50 watt ultraviolet light (395 nanometers) to Costa Rica and it attracted a lot of cool stuff to the projector screen I am using as a moth sheet. 1182

Alan Rockefeller @alanrockefeller.bsky.social · 08/03/2026Thanks! I didn't do anything crazy - just put a Ulanzi vl49rgb LED light a couple inches away. I recommend that everyone carries these - they are cheap, charge with usb-c and will dramatically elevate even a cell phone photo. 110
Alan Rockefeller @alanrockefeller.bsky.social · 08/03/2026OM System digital - film can't be focus stacked. I like the sound of Olympus better than OM System though. 100
Alan Rockefeller @alanrockefeller.bsky.social · 08/03/2026Yea a lot of tiny Mycena have translucent stems. 000
Alan Rockefeller @alanrockefeller.bsky.social · 08/03/2026Yea I chould say OM-System OM-1 to differentiate it from the film camera, but I like the sound of Olympus better. Grant is correct though, focus stacking with film is impossible. The smaller something is, the more important it is to focus stack it. For very tiny subjects its almost required. 100
Alan Rockefeller @alanrockefeller.bsky.social · 08/03/2026I think iNaturalist is the best app to identify things - it is trained on hundreds of millions of observations, takes into account location, creates permanent biodiversity records and is free. 020
