Why would a culture obsessed with authenticity view endless synthetic media as anything more than a fad curiosity

Using AI to create visual artifacts indistinguishable from traditional media aesthetics really misses its potential. I don’t want to see more of the same, more quickly. I want to see things I’ve never seen before

Technically impressive yes but I know of very few young people who think AI is “cool” in the rock n’ roll sense which seems bad for a new tech attempting to intervene in every aspect of culture

Most people can’t distinguish diamonds from cubic zirconia. Therefore real and fake diamonds should be valued equally. Do I understand this correctly?

People on social media work themselves into rigid anti-AI (or pro-AI) positions, making it hard to publicly admit to any benefits (or harms) I don’t think this matches peoples’ actual AI use which is somewhere between total refusal and enthusiastic adoption

Not anti AI art but I will say I can easily enter a 4+ hour flow state while painting that would never happen working with AI tools The roulette aspect of prompting (which is part of its gambling-like appeal) frustrates each gesture from building toward a cohesive whole

I like this 1980s Kim Gordon quote to partly explain why AI wont supplant human art: “People pay to see others believe in themselves” Already seeing increased cultural cachet of handmade over automatic. An expression of “faith in ourselves,” as Miyazaki put it after the AI demo

AI will make everyone a filmmaker the same way VHS did in the 80s, digital camcorders in the 00s, iPhones in the 10s

First snow of the season, Brooklyn, 35mm film
Peaceful snow-covered park under a gray winter sky. Trees and bushes frosted with ice. Two people build a snowman. Brick apartment building in the background.Peaceful snow-covered park, large trees frosted with ice. Park benches and fencing line the stark white landscape. People and their dogs visible through the wintry haze.Outdoor performance space, covered in snow. Vibrant murals, dancing figures in red and green on lower walls, with an abstract figurative mural above. Two children play beneath the snowy trees.Brooklyn park-goers walking near a modern building. Snow-covered roof and ground create stark geometric shapes. Frost-laden trees frame the angular architecture.

Photos I took driving Pennsylvania to Kentucky, 35mm
Many horses wearing colorful blankets running across a fenced pasture as the sun sets. Bare trees line the horizon, black fences divide the farm fields.
A herd of white and black cattle gathered on a hillside pasture, warm afternoon light. A pond reflects winter trees, wood fences visible along the fields.
A brown horse wearing a halter standing in a dimly lit barn, looking directly. Natural light filters through windows, illuminating the wooden stall walls.
Interior of a rustic barn with exposed wooden beams. American flag hangs from the ceiling, several horses stand in stalls below.

“…every design choice expresses a vision of humanity.”
Pope Leo XIV: Technological innovation can be a form of participation in the divine act of creation. It carries an ethical and spiritual weight, for every design choice expresses a vision of humanity. The Church therefore calls all builders of #Al to cultivate moral discernment as a fundamental part of their work—to develop systems that reflect justice, solidarity, and a genuine reverence for life.

AI artists who valorize custom or ‘handcrafted’ aspects of image generation (training your own model on your own data instead of using ‘off-the-shelf’ models) mirror the valorization of ‘hands-on’ work that motivates anti-AI criticism of AI art
