A new addition to my “birds on the telephone pole” collection. Crows, scrub jays, mockingbirds, and hawks perch here; woodpeckers love climbing the pole. Mourning doves often perch on the wires. But this is the first I've seen one on the pole. #BackyardBirds #MourningDove #Birds #BirdPhotography

One proud bird. #BackyardBirds #AmericanCrow #Crow #Birds #BirdPhotography
An American Crow — a medium sized bird that's solid black from beak to tail feathers — looks around while standing on top of a wood utility pole.

A little collective “me time” for the mourning doves after our first rain. #BackyardBirds #Birds #BirdPhotography #MourningDove #Autumn
Five tan and gray-colored mourning doves perch high up on a telephone line that runs diagonally from lower left to upper right. The birds and telephone wire are against a backdrop of a very old oak tree that is covered with orange lichen.

My first #Honeybee of 2025! One of dozens on the #Rosemary this morning after the storm. I'm sure they've been out there awhile; I've just been sulking too much to get out and take pictures. #BloomScrolling #Pollinators #Flowers
A European honey bee explores the tiny, rather scruffy-looking light purple flowers of a rosemary bush. There are many little flowers, and the succulent-like leaves of rosemary in the background.

Jack and Jill survey their domain. This is the third year they've taken over the three adjacent back yards on our corner, from which I infer their nest has to be nearby, perhaps even in this old oak tree. #BackyardBirds #ScrubJay #Birds #BirdPhotography
Two California Scrub Jays — large songbirds with a white body, azure tail, back, and wings, a dark blue head, and very stout black beak — perch in the scraggly winter branches of a large oak tree.

For those who celebrate. 🙂
A shaggy barred owl (who is none the less superb) is perched on a high branch in a shaggy tree in a forest.

A rather scruffy but also quite determined nasturtium, which randomly showed up in a coconut-husk planter that I'd kinda forgotten about. #BloomScrolling #Flowers #FlowerPhotography #Nasturtium
Two circular yellow flowers with red centers bloom from a plant of circular green leaves and naked-looking red stems.

Another of my wife's plants on the front porch that seems happy to bloom in winter. #BloomScrolling #Flowers #FlowerPhotography
A plant with broad light-green leaves produces a number of five-petaled petunia-like blossoms.

My wife's geranium looks very nice right now. 🙂 She has many plants on the front porch, but this is the only one blooming. #BloomScrolling #Geranium #Flowers #FlowerPhotography
Three intense red flowers with flat ragged-edged split petals and curly red stamens in their centers burst out from a head of 8-pointed-star shaped red and green leaves.

Yuletide Camelia, spied in my brother-in-law's front yard on New Years Day. #BloomScrolling #Flowers #FlowerPhotography #Camelia
A red flower with five nearly circular petals and a very busy cluster of dozens of intense yellow stamens in its center.

I love climbing nasturtium, but they grow like weeds which means I really need to keep them neat so the yard guy doesn't rip them out. #BloomScrolling #Nasturtium #Flowers #FlowerPhotography
A single yellow/orange split-petal climbing nasturtium blossom pokes its head out from its bed of dark green leaves.

Another sign of things to come, although this double hibiscus should be fully open in a day or two. (The roses won't start blooming for another three months, if history holds.) #BloomScrolling #Flowers #Hibiscus #DoubleHibiscus
A large orange/red flower bud, just starting to open, stands on the end of a woody stalk with bright green leaves.

There is a tradition that narcissus blooming before New Year's Day indicates good luck for that year. Ours has been blooming earlier and earlier every year, which I don't think is what they meant. But the flowers still make me happy when they bloom. #BloomScrolling #Narcissus #Flowers
A row of white flowers, some open, some just budding. The individual blooms have 6 ellipse-shaped petals, with little white cups full of pollen in the middle. It's winter and the background is very dark green.

The first sign of Things to Come: Budding branches on one of my rose bushes. #BloomScrolling #Flowers #Roses
A dead-looking woody branch, marked with angry-looking thorns, with small tufts of new growth in greens and reds bursting from its sides.

Cabbage white butterfly on my wife's gerberas. Late fall. #BloomScrolling #Flowers #Butterflies #Pollinators
A cabbage white butterfly stands with its wings partially open on a bright orange gerbera flower. The flower stands on a bulky green stem. There are other orange flowers out of focus in the background.

I have faced fascism before, in this very country. I was one of 120,000 Japanese Americans summarily rounded up and expelled from our homes at gunpoint, all for the crime of looking like the people who bombed Pearl Harbor. I spent my childhood behind barbed wire. My parents lost everything. 1/

Top of the morning, BlueSky folks. Just checking out the feed, looking around, and checking the threat landscape. Much like this oak titmouse. 🙂 #BackyardBirds
An oak titmouse — a small songbird with a gray head and back, lighter gray breast, and distinctive gray crest — looks sidewize at the camera while perched on a bird feeder.
