While symbolic in many ways, the Emancipation Proclamation changed the character of the war. It enabled Black Americans to serve in the Union Army, and by the end of the war, almost 200,000 black soldiers and sailors had fought for the Union and freedom.

#OnThisDay in 1862, after the Confederate defeat at Antietam, Lincoln issued the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, which took effect on January 1, 1863. In it, Lincoln freed all slaves in Confederate or contested areas of the South, but it did not apply to the entire nation.

After being closed for renovations for nearly three years, the Old State Capitol in Springfield, Illinois this summer reopened to the public. This wasn't the first time. Did you know the building was deconstructed and then reconstructed in the 1960s to preserve it is a valuable Lincoln landmark?

The second debate took place in Freeport, Illinois #OnThisDay in 1858. During this debate, when Lincoln asked him whether the people of a territory could lawfully exclude slavery prior to the creation of a state constitution, Douglas articulated what became known as the Freeport Doctrine.

Lincoln wrote this in a public letter to James C. Conkling #OnThisDay in 1863. Lincoln wanted this message read at a major Union rally in Springfield, Illinois, to defend his Emancipation Proclamation and rally public support for the remainder of the conflict.
