First past the post not beating the allegations www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...
Polls have consistently shown that sovereignty is a low priority of Quebecers, with one Léger poll showing that 70 per cent of Quebecers would not support separating from Canada.
But the electoral math told a different story.
In a a remarkable feat made possible by the first-past-the-post electoral system, the PQ formed a minority government with as little as 28 per cent of the popular vote - the lowest voter share to achieve that in Quebec's history, and one that is certain to add fuel to the debate about electoral reform.

Mandates develop from the interpretation of elections.[7] If it becomes widely accepted that the voters support a given platform, then it will be understood that a mandate exists.[5] There is no agreed upon metric for how much support a position must have—or be believed to have—before there is a mandate for its implementation.[8] The median mandate is the theory that the policy preferences of the median voter give a political mandate.[9] This presents its own challenges when applied, as median policy preferences are often more complex and have multiple dimensions.[10]In the United States, the two-party system always results in one party having a majority in government that can be interpreted as a mandate.[13] Some political systems, such as that of the United Kingdom, frequently give a majority of legislative seats to a party that received only a plurality of the vote. In this case, the majority only carries a mandate if it is representative of the median voter.[14]

Wikipedia entry for: Mandate (politics)

In representative democracies, a mandate is a perceived legitimacy to rule through popular support. Mandates can be conveyed through elections, in which voters choose political parties and candidates based on their own policy preferences. The election results are then interpreted to determine which policies are popularly supported. The modern concept of a political mandate first developed around the 16th century and became a prominent aspect of politics after the French Revolution

I've been thinking about this Abacus poll that shows Canadians believe they have more in common with Europe than the U.S. in terms of shared values. On the one hand it seems tough to fathom given how integrated our countries are and how many Canadians live and work in the U.S. or vacation there...
An image from Polling Canada titled: "Thinking about shared values, way of life and outlook on the world, would you say Canada has more in common with the countries of the European Union or with the United States?"
The stacked bar charts break down answers into four categories: More With European Nations (blue), Both Equally (yellow), More With The United States (red), and Unsure (grey).
Overall Canadians
More With European Nations: 56%
Both Equally: 20%
More With The United States: 16%
Unsure: 8%
By Region
BC: 60% European Nations | 22% Both | 12% United States | 6% Unsure
QC: 60% European Nations | 18% Both | 12% United States | 10% Unsure

Running cover for renaming Lake Ontario, saying Hegseth "has a point" when he mocks cadets, but after being decimated in three by elections, the main problem is dumb voters. The Canadian commentariat on X is winning.
@KatKanada

I'm with @ezralevant on this one.

Canadians' failure to understand Trump's rhetorical style is resulting in major meltdowns for all the wrong reasons.

The outrage is disingenuous. NONE of those people objected when our NATIONAL ANTHEM was changed.

They object to a name change only when someone else is holding the pen.

But, as Ezra points out. This train of thought is in the minority.

The anti-American sentiment is dialled up to an 11 here the moment because people are suffering from TDS.

Sheila Gunn Reid of the Rebel:

In fairness, my high achieving kid quit cadets when they lowered the dress and comportment standards to basically nothing and made her put her pronouns in her zoom name.

Maybe, just maybe, Hegseth is onto something.

@tristinhopper

I'm not entirely sure how it's Poilievre's fault that a plurality of the Canadian electorate don't seem to understand what country or era they inhabit.

Third goal in as many games for Cyle Larin with Southampton
A sports app screenshot shows a match update at the 25th minute with the text "Goal!". Southampton FC player Cyle Larin scored a header from the centre of the box to the bottom right corner, assisted by Ryan Manning with a cross from a set piece, making the score Southampton 1, Millwall 1. A mini-pitch diagram marks the shot location just above the penalty box, and a graphic of a goal net shows the ball entering the bottom right corner alongside advanced metrics of 0.19 xG and 0.60 xGOT. The shot type is listed as Header, situation as Set piece, and result as Goal.

4. By this morning, it was an official Conservative Party of Canada talking point:
Pierre Poilievre: Two weeks before the 25th anniversary of the deadliest terrorist attack in American history, CBC has instructed its journalists not to refer to 9/11 as a terrorist attack.

Nearly 3,000 innocent people were murdered that day, including 24 Canadians, in an act of monstrous evil.

Canadians stood shoulder to shoulder with our American friends, neighbours, and allies in the aftermath. Nearly 7,000 stranded passengers found safe harbour in Gander. More than 40,000 Canadians would go on to serve in Afghanistan alongside our allies in the fight against terrorism.

To call 9/11 anything other than a terrorist attack is an appalling distortion of history. It dishonours the victims and their families, the survivors, and the first responders who suffered from the horrors of that day.

CBC must immediately apologize and retract this directive.

Tweet from House Republicans: What possible motive could there be for sanitizing the worst terrorist attack on American soil? Care to explain,

WE WILL NEVER FORGET 9-11Ambassador Pete Hoekstra: Just this year,

Kinsella's writing framed it as a policy aimed specifically at 9-11, as opposed to one about the usage of the word "terrorism". The headline in the Sun went so far as to claim the CBC's stance was that 9-11 was not a terrorist attack - as opposed to one aimed at how to use the term, at all times
