The real solution is to just pedestrianize all streets on Halloween, though.
Halloween is the deadliest day of the year for child pedestrians
Pedestrians ages 0-17 fatally struck by motor vehicles, total by the day of year for 2000 through 2020.
Chart showing October 31 is an outlier with over three times the average deaths. Chart from Vox

Okay, I’ve met a *lot* of dogs canvassing, and plenty of cats over the years. But this is the first time I’ve ever met a dragon while doorknocking. Hoping I can count on Luna’s vote.

The main problem with the Earl Grey bike bus is nobody wants to wait for the bike bus to get to their house. We almost had a bike bus *to* the bike bus this morning.
Adult rides bike next to kid riding bike and wearing reflective vest. Further ahead, more kids wearing vests are visible riding in the same direction.

This isn’t a school pickup line, this is cut through drivers waiting to turn right onto Osborne in front of Gladstone School, making the trip to and from the playground more dangerous than it should be. All because Ross Eadie wouldn’t close the slip lane at Wellington and Gertrude.

Up to date practices regarding shared lane marking on streets that prioritize bikes are to mark the middle of the lane, not the rightmost safe space, to indicate that sharing does not mean there is a bike ghetto but that bikes are (at least) equal to cars.

This might be a safe lane position with the vehicles currently parked there, but rapidly becomes door zone position when a large SUV or truck is parked in the same spot. When I ride there I’m generally past the far left edge of what’s been painted.

B. Assist bicyclists with lateral positioning in lanes that are too narrow for a motor vehicle and a bicycle to travel side by side within the same traffic lane,
C. Alert road users of the lateral location bicyclists are likely to occupy within the traveled way,
D. Encourage safe passing of bicyclists by motorists, and

I’m unconvinced that kindness is a more effective response to drivers encroaching on space and creating danger than anger is. The lesson needs to be remembered and reacted to at a subconscious level. I want the bright colours we wear on the road to register as aposematism, not vulnerability.

You know what would prevent anyone from ever being surprised by the school zone in September again? If school zones were in effect year-round.
"September days before school starts are immensely profitable. There's nothing going on and it still feels like holidays and those are streets that are normally 50," Pankratz said.
The associate professor estimates photo-radar tickets in Winnipeg generate, on an average month, about $4 million. That figure is higher when drivers are adjusting to new routines during back-to-school season, he said.

Andrew Kohan @akohan.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
You know what would be a more effective solution than paint for wide roads where everybody speeds next to schools? Not having wide roads where everybody speeds next to schools. A permanent reduction in speed in school zones lets us re-engineer these roads for safety instead.
"We are also piloting a new school-area pavement marking as a way to increase driver awareness when entering a school zone," Dooley said in a statement.
She said these markings are being tested, starting in late September, at five schools with wide streets that are speeding hot spots.

The norms of driving culture are notable for how lawless and dangerous behaviour have become so routine
The study, which used focus groups and a large nationwide survey, found that most drivers consider going as much as 10 miles per hour over the speed limit totally acceptable. In some cases, drivers said going as much as 25 miles per hour over the speed limit felt normal.
Three in 10 drivers agreed with the statement that no one actually drives the speed limit. Nearly 30% of all traffic deaths in 2023 were tied to speeding, and in 2024 - the most recent year for which national crash data is available - more than 11,000 people were killed in crashes involving a speeding driver.
"This idea that, oh, everybody does it and it's fine, is something that we're going to have to work really hard to change in order to help lower that number of fatalities," Howell said.

Serious question: why are we repainting with minimal white marks like this in August, when we have durable, more visible road markings elsewhere that we know will hold up through a winter?

Plainly: driving so warps people’s minds that we are told we must accept our deaths at the hands of drivers, that our system of laws puts no duty upon those in power to value life over the convenience of a single mode of mobility www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...
But a panel of three appeal court judges ruled Friday there is no constitutional obligation to regulate the use of roads in any particular manner.
The Ford government has long maintained removing the bike lanes would improve traffic congestion in the Greater Toronto Area.
"The legislature is free to legislate to remove a bicycle lane from a road - indeed, it may remove a road entirely - without implicating the Charter," reads the decision from three appeals court judges.
The judges wrote that Schabas's ruling inflated the negative impacts of removing bike lanes.

Fare capping begins

News
Good morning r/Toronto redditors!
I'm popping on to tell you: do not buy a TTC monthly pass this September.
Yes! I just announced the start date for our fare-capping program: September 1st. After 47 rides (to start!), it's free.
Instead of paying for a monthly pass at the beginning of the month - when all your bills are due - you can now get the same discount as a monthly pass, but pay as you go.
If you commute to work and take the TTC on weekends, you'll be riding free before the month is over.
We put in a plan to the TTC to reduce the cap to 40 rides in 2027, which would make riding on the weekends free for weekday commuters.
The fare cap will be automatic for all payment types! No forms, no sign-ups, it will just

"As a councillor, I have come to believe that l can no longer do the work in the way I think it should be done ... It looks increasingly like an executive team that is valuing compliance and not fearless advice from council"
Yup, I can almost hear your response, and believe me, I said pretty much the same thing: "Are you kidding me? An executive council with Gillingham at the head is running our city? Did this city suddenly morph into a corporation? Is democracy in Winnipeg under threat?"Well, if Coun. Rollins is right, the answer to that would be - "Yes, it is."
Because here's the thing. Your representative on council is supposed to be there to represent your interests. And if your representative is being shut out of key aspects of the decision-making process, then so are you and every other citizen who voted for them.
And that, my friends, is anti-democratic.
