Books read in September: HardWired, Walter Jon Williams. From 1986, one of the first Neuromancer imitations off the block. I used to have the Tor paperback but never got around to reading it. Derivative of course but good storytelling by a conscientious pro.

What's the greatest "greatest hits" album ever? It's the only greatest hits album I can think of that's actually a good organic album, more than the sum of its parts, where most greatest hits albums are surprisingly less despite the quality of the individual songs.

Speaking of great series deleted from Crunchyroll, if you have a (U.S.) library card, you can watch Parasyte: The Maxim for free on Kanopy.

All bummed out because Crunchyroll dropped Black Lagoon. I'd been meaning to watch it but I put it off too long.

I decided to look it up in the library catalog. I wasn't optimistic but there it was! Plastic, Prism, Void! So I checked it out and even photographed it with my phone so you can see how it looks with library markings.

A copy of Plastic, Prism, Void laid out on a beige library table with a bunch of stickers and labels along the spine. And a piece of paper I'm using for a bookmark peeping over the top edge because I'm already reading it.

I was listening to "Angie" by the Stones like many times before but this time when the strings came in I thought, "Wait, are those Ziggy Stardust strings?" (The song is reportedly about Angela Bowie or possibly David Bowie.)

Finished my first book of the year, Keigo Higashino's Salvation of a Saint, a murder mystery. My second book by him, after the crime thriller The Name of the Game is a Kidnapping. and I enjoy his terse, sharply observed writing. The solution was not only ingenious but psychologically terrifying.

My last book of the year was Eye of Cat by Roger Zelazny. Finished it around 11:30 Wednesday night, just under the wire. Suspenseful. Billy Singer, cool Zelazny protagonist, is retired but used to collect alien animals for an Earth zoo. He suspects one was a sentient being. Turns out he was right.

I watched two movies in one day and, surprise, they were both set in the year 2150! Obvious in the case of Daleks' Invasion Earth 2150 AD. A plot twist in Vanilla Sky (2000) which turns out to be taking place in virtual reality 150 years in the future. So 2150 exactly.

I'm reading Ursula K. Le Guin's The Dispossessed for the first time. It's odd that I haven't read it before. I have read The Left Hand of Darkness, The Lathe of Heaven, A Wizard of Earthsea, and The Wind's Twelve Quarters, most of Le Guin's amazing run in the early '70s.

I'll always associate semi-colons with Philip K. Dick; they're the grammatical sparkplug of those nervous two-stroke sentences he uses to sketch in a scene or idea.

I think the No Kings demonstrations are great but I'm not sure I'm going to go. I went last time and I didn't know anyone, there wasn't anything to do, and my legs got tired from standing, so I left after half an hour. It's not as if someone was there with a clicker doing an official count.

I'm reading a minor Philip K. Dick novel, Dr. Futurity, that I read in high school as half of an Ace Double. I remember liking it okay, though I'd forgotten everything except a few images. I'm up to page 34, and we're in a society ruled by eugenics, where it's illegal to treat the sick or injured.

The cover of Dr. Futurity, with a man in what looks like spacesuit picking his way through a lifeless jagged landscape, looked over by a full moon that's half skull.
