It's fun to flip back to 1954 conversations of "automatic programming" - using a compiler to generate machine code based on human-friendly text instead of manually writing it out by hand. www.computerhistory.org/collections/...
SUMMARY
Grace Murray Hopper
Remington Rand, Inc.
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
There has been, it is true, some repetitive material in the talks
given here. This is good, for it serves to emphasize the directions in
which we must travel. It shows that those with common problems have
come up with similar solutions. A few conclusions may be drawn.
Automatic coding, young as it may be, is 'Chere to stay." Certainly it
has been shown, that in order to cope with ':one-shot" problems and the
shortage of programmers, the use of the computer to assist in the coding
is almost mandatory. There seems to be further agreement that the kind
of executive routine used will be dependent on two factors, the capabili-
ties of the particular computer and the types of applications involved.
It is of further interest to note that the methods are applicable over the
wide range of computers as indicated by Mr. Livingston's report relat-
ing to small computers and those relating to 701's and UNIVAC ' s.

I think anyone who wants fairly radical restructuring of society should be guided in equal measures by optimism and an education in the ways that previous attempts have resulted in mass suffering and authoritarianism. I found this collection of translated documents to be particularly interesting.

Excerpt from the book Grand Hotel Abyss. “Thinking objectifies itself to become an automatic, self-activating process… an impersonation of the machine that it produces itself so that ultimately the machine can replace it.”

It took me almost a decade of living nearby but I finally got a chance to climb and then rappel from the top of Der Kegel today!

I put together a talk for HYTRADBOI 2025 about my favorite technique for building databases or almost anything with high complexity - extreme rewriting!

It’s always a bit surreal being back in the old country.

Here's an example of ChatGPT doing something interesting with a normal programming language: sha512 hashing "hello" 507 times, which it would not have correctly predicted using a plain LLM. We'll see more multi-modal stuff like this over time using SMT solvers for cooler stuff etc...
asking chatgpt to write a python program that sha512 hashes an input 507 times, and then show an output, which it would not be able to predict if using a pure LLM.a manually written python program that hashes a number 507 times, which shows the same output as the chatgpt result

It was a total horror show before 2024, but now Berlin has one of the fastest systems in Germany with the opening of the new citizenship processing center at the Landesamt für Einwanderung. The FB group is actually a pretty good source of up-to-date info: www.facebook.com/groups/13314...

After 8.5 years in Germany, I finally earned the right to wear socks and sandals. Citizenship has been a goal for a long time- I’ve had to line up at 4am and dodge physical punches at the immigration office to compete for limited appointment slots for visas. Now it’s time for some exciting new goals

Took a chance and used mezcal instead of red wine while making the sauce for this lasagna. The smokiness really goes well with the spicy salsiccia inside!
